A millionaire Premier League football star has demanded a huge pay rise – because he is shocked by Britain’s high tax rates.

Andrey Arshavin, who earns £80,000 a week, is renegotiating his Arsenal contract after being ‘unpleasantly surprised’ at his income tax bills, which in his native Russia were only 13 per cent.

The move by the Arsenal striker is expected to lead to a wave of similar pay claims by other top players.

There are three things in life that are certain. They would be: Life, Death and......what would the 3rd be?

It's a hard life, innit it Andrey.

While a talent, he doesnt look like the brightest lightbulb on the street - meaning what kind of guys says "yea let's go to Arsenal - 80,000 a week sounds good."

After signing the deal and getting his first 40,000 pound cheque, "Why they only pay me for half a week, is it because I didn't start the match?"

This is a good example of why football fans are now so distanced from the players of the teams they support. I mean how can he expect sympathy, when he is getting in a week, what a large percentage of the working population would be happy to get in a year.

Asharvin is almost as bad as the corrupt wan#@%s @ Westminster.

And as the saying goes, if you don't like it, piss off back home. :)

he's not that bad. not like he's actively defrauded the public purse.

footballers are almost to a man though thick, greedy and entirely too sheltered.

Was amazed to read the other day that Allan Smith, currently with Newcastle is reportedly being sought by 3 clubs but they would have problems meeting his current 60,000 quid a week wages. Now I like Allan Smith , good lad , and a trier but hardly one of the first players you would think of as a top player. How football arrived at this situation is beyond comprehension. Would be nice to see a list compiled of players and their wages, supporters, I believe, have right to know.

Steve I wasn't comparing them on the fact that they defraud, it was more in line with their greed - which both footballers and politicians are known. As for the tax rate of 50% should have had that checked out in his contract, obviously his adv isors were not particularly thorough in negotiation.

I'm not going to go on about tax rates too much, as I am sure any one who has worked in Britain are fed up with the tax rates which are imposed on the normal working people, which are then squandered away by idiotic politicians and their BS policies. :)

if the club is a plc you can usually find lists of employee wages on their websites in annual reports i think.

i don't have any problem with british tax rates, if anything they are not high enough. what i do have a problem with though is that they get spunked away and even stolen by self-interested politicians who claim to be public servants but are nothing of the kind. i'd have much higher tax bands in britain but i don't think that the politicians can be trusted to use the money wisely or honestly unfortunately.

What is rather ironic, is that these decifful self interested scum were trying to intefere in football only a few weeks ago, talking greed etc, etc and some of the same asshol_e saying that have now been found to be claiming bogus expenses. Guy Fawkes is needed. :)

yeah, they have rather shat on their own doorstep haven't they? but then you could probably say the same about football club owners and chairmen who continue to operate clubs at a loss while funding them with loans while all the time raising ticket prices and pricing working class football fans out of the game.

Thankfully, don't have to contribute to those tossers expenses anymore.
