Ive been married for five years, separated for two years. My wife has fallen pregnant to another man who has subsequently left her....for good.

My question is this: when the child is born, am I able to put myself on the thai birth certificate as father of the child? I want to give the child the chance to have a decent life and possibly obtain a foreign passport.

Thanks for any input.

You could (plenty of fathers do so not knowingly) but you would be 'knowingly' making a false declaration at the when applying for passports, visas etc

A more important question for you to ask is to examine your own motives for wanting to do this. You've broken up with your wife - I doubt that the cause of the break-up has been resolved and if at some level you are thinking that the security/good offer is going to put things right then sad to say but you are almost entirely wrong.

Worst case, an unresolved problem could fester and the child could become part of a simmering resentment.

Obtaining a foreign passport for the child may not be as easy as you hope.

I know one Australian father who had to provide DNA proof his Thai born child was actually his before an Australian passport was issued. The child's mother and father had been married a number of years at the time of the child's birth.

It is also fraud, and as such trying to obtain a travel document in the manner you describe is punishable in most western countries.

In my case, the very fact that one of my middle names appears on some of my offical ID and not others, was enough for the Australian embassy to give me the run around when trying to get my childs Australian passport recently.

You say seperated, not divorced. If you are still married, it might not be fraude and perfectly legal. The law presume you are the father when you are married. You would actively need to deny it to not be the legal father.
