When I could no longer access www.immigration.go.th I assumed that the link was dead and posted that in the visa forum but I learnt that others, using OpenDNS, had no problem accessing it and got useful advice how to set up OpenDNS on my PC.

I believe I have now set up OpenDNS correctly on my computer but I still cannot access www.immigration.go.th and now also not www.imm.police.go.th. As this is really off topic in the visa forum I am bringing it here. I chose to set up OpenDNS on my PC only rather than have the network administrator do it on the router. From Tywais I had this screenshot to guide me:

On my PC I saw that I could choose from two Internet protocols and first I chose IPv6 but this did not work:

Next I selected IPv4 and this accepted the IP addresses for OpenDNS

This done I tried to load the web pages of the Immigration Bureau but for both I again got the message "This webpage is not available". Now it occurred to me to look for help on www.opendns.com and the first thing I saw on the web page was a confirmation that I was now using OpenDNS

So here I am asking for help. What am I doing wrong with the setting up of OpenDNS?

I had assumed you needed to do it in the router/modem when using a network connection for internet access but I could well be wrong. But can confirm both sites open for me with Open DNS in D-Link

Hold down the Windows Key and press R;

in Command line type: cmd;

click OK;

type: ipconfig /all and press Enter.

You should now see the settings the network connection

write down:

IPv4 Address

Subnet Mask

Default Gateway

DNS Servers will show to which DNS Servers you're connected at that time.

Now look at your picture 3 and go to the same place again. Type in the data you just had wrote down: IP ASddress, Subnet Mask and Gateway

The Gateway Address is also the address you'll need to open the Firmware of your Router.

In IE type in the Address line: http://192.168.1.1 (if that is your Gateway Address) or similar

In user Name and Password you have to type in the Username and Password from your Modem/Router under WAN Settings you can you may find the DNS Server addresses and if they're there, please change them to the setting of Open DNS.

Maybe yopu post which Modem/Router you're using so we're able to help more detailed.

Good luck.

It should work.

If you do as Maestro, only the PC with those settings will use openDNS.

If you do it in your router, ALL PC's on the network will use openDNS...

The URL works for me though, both with openDNS and Maxnet's own DNS servers.

Here's the result of ipconfig / all, with the screenshot of my IP settings next to it (I have pixelated a few things because I do not know if they could benefit a hacker):

I really want to set up OpenDNS on my PC only, not on the modem/router. So far I only entered the two DNS addresses in the lower part of the configuration dialog window, under "Use the following DNS server addresses". My ISP gives me a dynamic IP number and I wonder if I really have to fiddle also with the upper part, ie with "Use the following IP address". If so, is the following what I have to type in there?

IP address: 192.168.1.37

Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

Default gateway: 192.168.1.1

P.S. I tried it with the above settings for "Use the following IP address" just now and the immigration sites still remain inaccessible, but every other site works.

Just type the bold numbers in the setting of you network connection for IP v.4

The dynamic IP address of your ISP is the IP which let you connect to the Internet and the ISP change that from time to time.

Did you've some other computer "around" somewhere to test the problems? If possible try with an other computer.

And try temporary to off your firewall and try to connect to the Immi pages without.

Cheers.

Good idea. I'll experiment with both tomorrow (now I'm off to a concert)

Yesterday, or perhaps it was the day before yesterday, it still did not work, also not on another computer. Today, without having changed anything, I can access both sites. Now I can search for that document on the immigration website I am looking for, if it is there all, ie the Police Order about the new restrictions on Visa-exempt entry on land borders.
