The Thai Farmers Association Wednesday threatened to deploy farm trucks or e-tan trucks to besiege major roads linking Bangkok to other regions.

Wichian Puanglamchiak, vice president of the association, said the besieging would stage to pressure the government to continue the rice pledging scheme.

The government has planned to use price guarantee instead of the pledging scheme.

Wichian said representatives of the association's members from 40 provinces will drive their farm trucks to Bangkok.

They would block the Asia Highway from the North, the Phaholyothin from the Northeast, Sukhumvit Road and Motorway from the East and Phetkasem Road from the South and West.

So they want to be overpaid for something that nobody wants right now.

The Phetkasem, too? Oh crap... :)

I need to get out to Nakorn Pathom next week. Anybody have a smart alternative?

If you don't want to fly, you could take a train from Hualamphong Railway Station in Bang Lamphu, Bangkok to one of the Northeastern provinces like Khorat or Ubon, and then take a bus to Nakhon Phanom. I don't know which would be the better place to board a bus to Nakhon Phanom though, since most information that I can find is for routes originating in Bangkok.

Best of luck to you.

This happens every year. There are many different farmer groups. Some are close to some poltical movements. Some are independent. The government will almost certainly make some concessions. In fact iirc Abhisit has already mentioned calling a quick meeting of the rice policy committee or whatever it si called with an eye to extending the old scheme through the current off season rice buy which I think is the issue of contantion.

In yesterday's Nation they mentioned 200 farmers at the Commerce ministry, led by some other Thai Rice assossiation. They also quoted anonimous source saying that the protest could be organised by rice millers, not farmers.

It's one big mess. There's no unified rice policy, just adhoc measures withoug any foresight.

If you are not happy with something, just riot, take over streets, bring things to a grinding hault.... why is this the thai way recently for ALL people?

Thai farmers are beginning to learn from Farang farmers. Especially the French farmers.

Yes, but you could also do it the easy way without the Isaan sightseeing detour; and take a 1 hour boat ride from Bangkok to Nakorn Pathom. :D

I am wondering why we can't get calendar of protests throughout the year so people can plan accordingly.

I agree, seeing as Thailand is now the regional hub of protests... :)

Pumjai Thai's policy proposal to have a rice mill in every district is interesting, a lot of farmers miss out on higher or subsidised rice prices because they're too far from a mill, so they end up selling to middlemen at a lower price. I wonder about the quality of the mills though, will they be able to compete with the private sector's. If so, it will certainly win many votes.

...and not only this, the Government is still having trouble to get rid of the stockpiled stuff - r

esidue from promises past governments have made to "help" their voters to help them -

and there it looks that because of the high prices guaranteed

and paid, the government will have to sell it at a loss! :)

And now they want guarantees, for prices nobody is going to pay in the first place...

But haven't they threatened to rally already last sunday in front of government house?
