Lottery sellers oppose online lottery

BANGKOK: -- More than 200 lottery sellers gathered in front of the Democrat party head office on Wednesday, demanding the government to scrap its online lottery scheme because it would harm the society.

Community Lottery of Thailand president Saiyon Osot-ngarm said the government should revise its plan to introduce the online lottery in the country because it may encourage gambling.

"This is not about the legality of the scheme but about the level of politicians' morality," he said. [more...]

I reviewed this article 2+ times to make sure that I understood that it was the lottery (sellers/president) who were protesting and why. Now that I am sure that I understand the article I am more confused than ever. If this was the local Southern Baptist shouting about morality, encouraging gambling, etc OK but these fellows appear to make a living from selling lotto tickets.

What's the difference, buying a lottery ticket or picking numbers online? They're both gambling!

I suspect that lottery sellers will not like the online idea because people may be able to purchase tickets for the correct price of 40/80 Baht instead of giving the lottery vendors an extra 20 baht above the ticket price.

Hypocrisy 101

The people who sell the lottery tickets themselves

are protesting the government doing it directly,

because it will hurt the culture... Righty O

Wrong, it will hurt their livelyhood and nothing more.

If the lottery online will hurt the Thai people,

then their own jobs are ALSO doing that.

Either gambling is good or bad.

I have no objections to state run lotteries

IF the proceeds go to good public works.

A few tickets for the lottery usually doesn't ruin families like

casinos and roving poker games can.

Gambaling addicts will feed their fix anyway.

The large pay out lotteries general don't cause the same effects.

I can understand why gambling is illegal in Thailand. It saddens me to see the amount of money that poor people will throw away on the lottery because of a lucky number from a monk or some other omen.

I know people that gamble half their income on the lottery. That's hardly a harmless flutter.

But I have to agree with you that at least if the profits from the lottery go to a good cause, some benefit comes from the madness.

Why invest in new lotto vending machine.

They could easily use currently available:

1. ATM - Bank ATM machine, that also take money straight from buyer account

2. CDM - Bank Cash deposit machine, i.e. you don't even need a bank account.

Theses machines are all Thailand. Even my 6 years old can use it.

I think that you will find that the 80 Baht ticket price includes a commission payment for the vendor. There is no justification for adding 25% to the official price, it just encourages people to play the illegal lottery. The illegal lottery does not benefit any good causes, only organised crime.

Oh, and the black lottery enables many people to earn a living, but the agent typically gets 10% commission.

I don't know about you, but if I went into a restaurant and ordered a meal at 100 Baht on the menu and the server said "Yes that will be 125 Baht", I would question it.

"Why is it 125 when the menu says 100?"

"That's 25% extra to enable me to earn a living"

"Don't you get paid?"

"Yes, but not a high salary, in fact I may I may have to start charging 35% soon as for some reason we have fewer customers these days"

"That new restaurant over the road is very busy"

"Yes, I don't know why. They're really stupid people over there, they charge the same as is written on the menu. Just lucky I guess"
