canuckamuck
I'll show some of my ignorance here, but I could never figure out the difference between different Windows offerings (ie. home, premium, ultimate) all I want is an operating system. Outside of price I do not understand the major differences between editions. I actually tried to figure it out from microsfts site, but they don't make it easy. I don't meant the difference between XP, Vista,7. That part is widely discussed. Edited June 26, 2009 by canuckamuck
Plus
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows...ompare-editions I'm thinking of getting it for an old notebook, and Home Premium doesn't offer "Windows XP mode" that is needed to install old drivers. I will also be missing Aero, but that's not a very big deal.

jeffer
Well, you wouldn't want Microsoft Thailand to offer any special deals now would you? Might encourage more people to buy a legal version... btw, anyone have a current Microsoft phone number in Thailand to use to validate a Windows XP operating system? My genuine 2 year old XP version won't let me past the log in stage. I get a message to validate it but the numbers are both overseas (purchased overseas) and don't work for me. phetaroi
you can order via amazon or others! Actually that leads me to a question. Do any of you buy software via Amazon and have it shipped here? If so, how much of a duty do you pay?
RKASA
EU has to pay more for win7 as much as twice the US price even without a browser, we aready know what most in Thailand will be paying. http://www.computerworld.com/action/articl...rc=news_ts_head
WatersEdge
Or you can go to www.OpenOffice.org and get the completely equivalent open source software download for free, with regular free online automatic updates to replace MicroSoft Office Suite A long time ago I switched to Thunderbird email from Outlook, Firefox web browser from Explorer also free downloads...do a search and download at your leisure Going beyond that, I just installed Ubuntu operating system, replacing a perfectly good XP Windows Pro Media so that I never have to worry about the ever present virus menace. And I never have to worry about Norton, MacAfee, etc to keep MicroSoft safe. Anyone ever wonder why MicroSoft needs outside products to be secure? That also is completely free open source There is a free lunch in this world after all. There is now a very real alternative to the entire MicroSoft world. But what I know from simple experience, Open Office saves straight to PDF. Acrobat opens pdf files straightway in Ubuntu My annoyances so far with Ubuntu & Open Office minor as they may be Open Office spreadsheet runs my large spreadsheet very slow, but that could be my ignorance of an unknown setting as I can't imagine this problem is the final answer, since these guys are classy in every way I ask myself why I don't just make the sheet smaller...expecting an answer shortly. I have not found the way to run WordPerfect on Ubuntu, but my son is hunting it down Open Office being a replacement for MicroSoft Word is no claim to fame Aside from these two minor points, everything else works faster. If I expound further I shall reveal my considerable ignorance. Not sure how a Farmer stuck his nose into a Software forum. I'm leaving now... RKASA
Well if your in the EU it can cost you twice as much to do so. PS I use adobe pdf in both Linux and windows no problem. I am sure there must be some abobe software that only runs on windows. I just feel sorry for ya about that, but then its a write off. If its for business just pass the cost along, you won't make any money if ya don't. I think the hidden windows tax is even higher then the Mac tax overall. Problem is we all pay it don't we, even those that don't use windows.

jbhh
even though this time MS had an open Beta version for people to test so they can sort out all the bugs, I would NEVER buy a Windows Version that has not at least a service pack 2.
MeetJohnDoe
I'll show some of my ignorance here, but I could never figure out the difference between different Windows offerings (ie. home, premium, ultimate) all I want is an operating system. Outside of price I do not understand the major differences between editions. The main features that most consumer level users of Vista or Win7 would be interested in are the HD/file encryption and HD/system back-up features found in the "Ultimate" versions of these products. In the Ultimate versions, there is a built-in file encryption feature called "Bit-locker" and there is a built-in system and HD back-up program. This software backs up your entire system (not just data) so if you have a system crash, you can reinstall your system exactly to the way it was before the crash. You save the cost of buying 3rd party software for these functions and they are nicely integrated into the OS so are easy to use. I also believe Ultimate's version of the Win Media Center software also has video viewing and recording functionality (built in TV-tuner software) so that if you can connect your PC to a TV source, you can view TV on the computer or view and save (DVR) TV content to your HD for later viewing. These features are not present on the versions of Media Center that ship with other versions of Windows. jeffer
I read somewhere there is also supposed to be a Windows 7 Starter version available for places like Thailand and unlike XP Starter there won't be a restriction on the number of windows you can have open at the one time. Sounded like it would be good for older computers as the main features missing were the fancier graphics and video which you could manage without if the price was right. The Thai Win 7 doesn't get released until a week after the main release so it will be interesting to see what happens. I never switched to Vista but most reports on Win 7 suggest it is what Vista should have been. Gotta burn the iso and take it for a test soon. vediovis
and how do I run Adobe software I need for business with Ubuntu...? Using Wine. Or you can keep your existing Windows installation and using it in a Virtual Box (Hardware virtualisation) from your Ubuntu. S.L.
