Anyone have experience with an enlarged prostrate gland and medication? I have been diagnosed with an enlarged prostrate gland and taking medication daily as I could not urinate and the medication allows me to urinate. My doctor advised me that I may have to continue the medication for the rest of my life. Anyone know if there are any alternatives available and any way to reduce the prostrate?

I recommend saw palmetto. It's very beneficial, at least : to many people. Can not be bought in Thailand. Gather information about it. Try to find out where and how to buy it. Do it. Now !

I would not recommended "Saw Palmetto" this herbal product has been promoted for this purpose for over fifty years, and the sales details still state that

the product "might" be helpful in reducing an enlarged prostrate, research has shown this is not the case hence the word "might" is still there when the manufacturer refers to the products effectiveness, if it was otherwise the manufacturer would be more than happy to state it positively.

To control an enlarged prostrate do the following ... reduce alcohol intake, massage the prostrate by lying on your back and placing 2/3 fingers 1" below you testicles and then massage for some five minutes and do that twice daily, in addition take up general exercising for the whole of the body (cardio & weights) this has proven to be helpful, once you start taking medication prescribed by doctors then you have to take it for the rest of you life, so it makes sense to stay clear of that.

Did you get the blood test for the PSA figures ? Go to a good urologist and follow his/her advice. Scan, rectal toucher, etc.

Agree with this advice. I recently began having trouble peeing. My first thought was prostate cancer. Luckily, for me, it is the benign condition. I am taking a somewhat low dose of Cardura every day and all is well. The doctor did say that way down the road I will probably have to have surgery.

Thanks for all the valuable information. I am 56 and at first the doctor did a rectal exam (finger up the butt) and had to wear a a bag and tube (don't know the name) for 2 weeks and now taking doxazosin on a daily basis. Had an infection and now seems to have cleared after antibiotics. Had an ultrasound ordered by the doctor. Are there other tests or procedures I should have?

An enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or benign prostatic hypertrophy) is most commonly treated with Alpha 1-blockers the same medication used to treat high blood pressure. xwteee mentioned saw palmetto which is an alternative to medication however you should seek professional medical attention and have a full set of tests run.

Was the doctor that you see a Urologist or a general doctor if it was a general doctor go to a hospital and see a Urologist for a PSA check but do not forget to tell him that you have had an infection because it might make the PSA count higher

Some GPs are quite thorough. Mine did one regimen of antibiotics just to make sure there was not an infection. Then prescribed Cardura because he was aware that when I moved to Thailand that drug would be available. Then did a PSA test.
