Thaksin was never here: KL's top cop

KUALA LUMPUR: -- Fugitive ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra was never in Malaysia nor was he given protection by the Special Branch as he has claimed, Malaysia's Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan said.

Musa said Malaysian police had no knowledge of any visit by Thaksin, despite earlier reports quoting Deputy Interior Minister Thaworn Senneam as saying Thaksin had been spotted in Malaysia recently but left the country before he could be arrested by local authorities.

Thaworn said Thai embassy officials had informed the Malaysian authorities to seek Thaksin's arrest and extradition.

But Musa said: "We were only alerted by the Thai embassy here of the fugitive's supposed presence early this month fol-lowing a news report in Bangkok.

"As far as we are concerned, he was never in the country and we did not send 20 Special Branch officers to protect him. We have checked with local hotels, Immigration and other sources, and there is no evidence to show he was ever here."

Thaksin told a community radio station in Udon Thani that his private jet stopped in Kuala Lumpur on July 4 for refuelling and that 20 Special Branch officers were sent to protect him. "They love and care about me," Thaksin said.

Musa was responding to a report in The Nation on Tuesday.

Only when you cross immigration you are in that country.

I compare parking on a tarmac of an airport with an airport transit lounge. If you remain there you are not in the country.

With the cohorts reports, lawyer reports, and to top it off telephone statements/calls from the elusive one, and all of this being reported by various news reporters, why don't they just ask him where he is? Where he has been? where he is going? With his history of shooting off his mouth, before engaging brain, one answer may be true. Or you could determine who owns his " private jet" , where it is located and check flight plans that are filed prior to take off. Then if the powers that be have an interest, have a committee on the ground to say hello. I think his PR group must have a lackey at the newspaper whose responsible for keeping the name in front of the people of Thailand.

You may be surprised how efficient immigration are at any airport as regards general aviation aka private planes. Flight plans are filed, and thoroughly checked before take-off is even authorised and at arrival.

A few years ago I worked at a handling agent at a UK airport that had lots of private plane movements every day. Special branch often contacted me and asked me to escort all onboard to their office, due to some irregularity in paperwork. I even saw a plane impounded due to some problem(the passengers throwing their bags over the airport perimeter fence haha). Believe me owners of private jets do not want to have their plane impounded. Very expensive mistake.

Thai citizens are not even allowed to leave Thailand on a private plane(unless it is deemed a commercial flight), dont believe me ask the handling agents at DM airport.

Ferwert, you're very repetitive. You've made the same rant on several posts recently, all saying that we farang don't know what's really going on because we're "parotting the English language media." You must have a very heavy agenda, perhaps you're involved with the Red Shirts or related somehow to Mr. T., I don't know.

If you look at Thai newspapers, they're plastered mostly with photos of scantily-clad sultry girls and blood and gore. Perhaps there is some news there. The English language media in Thailand is not perfect, but they do a rather good job, at least as good as the best that the Thai media has to offer. And yes, we farang have been informed about the 'million signature' red shirt initiative. BTW, as cheating & lying are endemic (and accepted) within Thai culture, it's not hard to imagine a whole lot of fake signatures on those pieces of paper. Also, signature gatherers could be saying to passers-by, "sign this paper if you want an improved Thailand." ....along with the peer pressure and 'follow the herd' mentality that abounds.

I've been a part of signature garnering campaigns in California, and I bet they're a world of difference. In the States, no one is coerced in to signing, and each signatory is allowed all the time he/she needs to get apprised of the issue before signing. No pressure. It takes weeks/months to get a quantity of qualified signatures. In this recent bogus 'million signature' campaign in Thailand, the results seemed to be available as soon as the campaign was announced.

All Thaksin stories are desgigned by his effective and no doubt well remunerated PR team who have designed a modern PR campaign unlike that of the Thai government. The purpose of the stories is to be sensational enough to attract rereporting by the local media and to make sure base language items like "they all love him" get into print/reports. While these kind of statements read ridiculous to us they resonate with certain feelings in certain areas of the country.

Discussing this topic at any other level is missing the point completely.

being Anti-Thaksin for very logical reasons, does NOT mean being anti-Issan Farmer or anti-poor,

nor pro Hi-so puyai status quo either.
