Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has sent a large box/es back to Australia from either Hat Yai, Trang or Nakhon? I want to send approx 100kg/1x1m? box. Just a guess on weight and size but posting through the mail is obviously very expensive as is excess baggage. I can't get the stuff back up to Bangkok so if anyone down south has experience sending stuff back to oz I would really appreciate any info on companies, price, etc.

Thanks heaps. :)

Unless you know of someone with a container going back that you can piggy back, the cheapest method will be courier. And if the box is 1 cubic metre then you will be charged based on volumetric weight, which is 167kg per cubic metre.

I look forward to some other, more creative, more complicated ideas from other forum members!!

Thanks for your fast reply Kurnell! After researching a bit it looks like I might just have to upgrade my hubby and mine baggage to the maximum allowed, including carry on that should be about 60kg and then post the rest back! Any other suggestions are still greatly appreciated though.

Last Saturday I sent 225 Kg in boxes to Australia. Fed Ex picked up in Kanchanaburi and delivered to addressee in Perth yesterday. Cost approx 4,980 Thai Baht per 25 Kg, that was a promotional price from Fed Ex.

They organised the packaging depends how you want to do it, the special was for Red Ex packages, you can discuss your requirements with them and ask if they have any promotions on.

I went with their packaging which was delivered to my home, they left me with the paperwork and came back an hour later and picked it all up. There is a free customer service phone number 1800 236 236 if you are ringing from outside of Bangkok, you will get prompts from there firstly for the language and then department. Good idea to make sure you get a name, as I dealt with 2 different people and they weren't in tune with each other which cost me an extra day. I will say that when the packages did get away it all was very quick and delivered on the promised day.

When I've had excess to get back to the UK from Thailand, I boxed it up and took the train to malaysia. Their surface rate was very good, and they will ship up to 20Kg boxes. I posted from Penang, but there is a Post Office in Padang Besar, Perlis, which is where the border railway station is. If you google for Pos Malaysia, you will find their latest rates, and they have English speaking customer service, which you can call or email. I've sent many boxes from Malaysia to UK, surface ie via sea and never had any go missing, had to pay import duty or had any issues (involvement/curiosity) with customs. It is delivered in the UK by Parcel Force. It may be possible to track the parcel now and you can buy insurance for it. However, when I was sending more expensive items back, I didnt state the true cost as it may be a temptation for people along the way and possibly cause customs to want import duty...

I think that Malaysia post is cheaper then Thailand is because it has some big shipping ports (Pork Klang) and is on a main shipping route.

I have seen people with massive boxes on the train to Malaysia and they didnt seem to have any problems. Best to check with Pos Malaysia and see what size and weight they can do for you and to pack and weigh before you leave Thailand. The box I took, I left on the train when going through immigration at the border. Youre not supposed to do that, but quite a few people left stuff on the train and I didnt have any problems in doing so.

Best call Padang Besar post office and see if they can help you. Alternatively, you could go to the main post office in Kangar, the main town of Perlis state. You can get off at Padang Besar (border) and get the bus to Kangar (40 mins) or you can stay on the train till the next stop Arau and then get the bus to Kangar (20mins). The buses are modern and there should be plenty of space to put your stuff.

Of course all of this is if you wanted to do it on a tight budget and didnt mind waiting for a whlle to get is delivered. Personally, I would make sure you have a personal possessions insurance, which covers your items where ever they are in the world and when you are not with them, and take photos of all the stuff your shipping and keep a note of the real cost.

Hope you find this of use...
