Hi BKK folks,

Myself and my wife love Thailand, and are looking to move to Bangkok, however the cost of schooling for one child, moving our two dogs, us, and moving some of our "stuff" means that we can't do it for about another 6/8 months.

Are there any (reasonably priced) personal primary teachers around? Good clean accommodation (non-condo)?

We just want to make this happen, but the expected costs are a bit scary.

Many thanks,

Sandy and Shirley

What Visa will you apply for?

Schools and houses plentiful.

Think that bringing the dogs is a bit of a trek for them, 13 hours closed in the hold of an aircraft, not my idea of a nice trip.

Also without the correct Visa you will be paying a lot of money for bringing some of your stuff over, if shipping it over.

Hi Sandy and Shirley,

Nice to see some fellow Scots coming over but would say that BKK, along with Pattaya and Phuket are the worst places to live in Thailand. So unless it is a must due to work would suggest you live almost anywhere else.

I moved by dogs and cats over many years ago and they love it here, also my sister and her family just moved over last year from Peterborough and bought their 2 greyhounds. So bringing the dogs is no problem just make sure they get plenty of water as always seem dehydrated when they get here.

Lots of schools around but standard is not the same as at home, so if you have children you need to research very carefully. If you want private teachers they are easy to find as all very short of money so usually jump at the chance of extra for private teaching.

If I can help in anyway just send me a PM.

very best of luck and hope to see you in the LOS soon.

Cheers

Robert

Or the best if you can afford to live there comfortably. As the OP is presumably after a reasonable standard of education for his child, those areas, along with Chiang Mai, are probably going to be the most suitable.

I would say put your dreams on hold and move there once your child finishes school in Scotland.

Firstly, what visas do you plan to live on there? The three of you would need to do constant visa runs.

Taking dogs from Scotland to the heat and humidity of Bangkok I think is a no no.

Think about it before you 'just want to make it happen'

Why no? I brought 2 white German Shepards from Scotland over 10 years ago and they have thrived over here. My sister just brought 2 Greyhounds over last year and again no problems. Did you bring over any dogs and if so what breed?

i also brought my dog a few years ago and it wasnt any problem at all.you just should check different airlines as they quoted me prices up to 700 euro for the dog.finally i was flying with air berlin, from munich to bangkok direct and they only charged me 50 euro for the dog(big dog, around 40 kilo!).also check with the thaiembassy wich shots are required as this is the only important thing when bringing the dog...there will be no quarantine or anything if you get all the shots.

and if you really plan to live in bangkok as i do....get a house with a garden and if you walk outside make sure you always carry a big stick to scare the street dogs because they are EVERYWHERE!!!

I also wouldn't be worried about bringing the dogs over, but I would check into what would happen to them if and when the OP wants to move back home again. I understand the UK have rather strict quarantine requirements which could mean that bringing the dogs back home to Scotland again would be more of a problem than bringing them to Thailand.

Totally agree - when I moved the dogs and cats I made the commitment that I could never return to the UK. As to go back would mean putting them into quarantine for 6 months and that was not an option.

I think you may have to provide us with a bit more detail.

How you are you and your wife?

Will either of you be working here?

What sort of visas will you be on?

Bangkok is a big city made up of made districts and sub districts, accomodation varys from very expensive palacial housing in gated communities to Thai style moo bhans. With costs ranging from 8-10,000 baht per month and upwards, over 100,000 baht per month is not uncommon.

Schooling is another issue, 500,000 baht per year per child is not uncommon and the top schools.

Your budget will be the deciding factor, for accomodation, 20-25,000 per month, school fees say another 10,000 baht per month, factor in costs such as medical insurance say another 5,000 baht per month, thats you at 40,000 baht per month and you havent even put food on the table, eaten out, paid for holidays and travel etc etc.

Bangkok and Thailand are no longer a cheap alternative, and in some cases it can be even more expensive to live in the same style as you had back home, many of the things that came for free have to be paid for here.

If you want any quality of live I would suggest you need at least 100,000 baht per month, others will say rubbish me the mrs and her 5 kids survive on 30,000 baht per month, survive being the operative word.

As they say, up to you, good luck.

Hi,

if you want too live in Bangkok I suggest the outskirts of it. There are very nice places and many international and bi-lingual (Thai + English) schools. My Son is going to one of the bi-lingual schools and his english is good (he just celebrated his 5 birthday).

The Costs mentioned from some other Thai Visa Fellows are standard, but there are some much cheaper Accomodations available and also cheaper schools.

If you need help send me a email.

I agree with somchaiq, if you want your money to go further then head for the outskirts. I live out near the old airport where I can rent a 3 bed house with garden for 8,000 a month, drive my car without sitting in traffic all day but still visit Big C, HomePro, Sizzler etc. with no problems. It all depends on what you are looking for, if you want to eat western food every day and drink in western bars then you need to be downtown.

Hello.i think its not true that if you go back to scotland the dogs have to stay in quarantine for 6 month.its an eu country so the rules should be the same as in germany!

before you leave you have to get an EU PET PASSPORT post-83617-1248938282_thumb.jpg

and the shots.then, and this is the important thing you have to check the blood about the rabbies shot did work properly and the level in the blood is high enough(you can to this only in an EU country, not in thailnad) and then every year you renew the shot in thailand and with this piece of paper you can go back to scottland with any problems and without quarantine!
