A message in the OP for all western punters , do not play in a game where the majority of players are Asian ,no matter what nationality ,unless you are fluent in their particular language .

As to the safety of the gaming precinct at Poipet,it is well lit and I have wandered around it at all hours numerous times without incidence. Darkened areas may be a different matter.

Recently ,I was lucky enough to pick up a middling size jackpot on the slots at GD , I was provided with a car ride and security guard escort to the desk at the Holiday Palace ,not 100 yards away.

Can only speak as you find.

Not sure - even if it's not for money, I think it's still illegal here (though I may be wrong).

Do you think Poker and Blackjack are illegal or just playing cards in general?

Do you think my 5 year old could be arrested for playing snap?

Heya Guys,

Great posts... replies.. Thankyou all.

1) Yoshi, yes, Farang is a general termmeaning non-thai foreigner, they were using it to apply to the Indian, the Korean and the Caucs... however when thye are adding "äss fuc_ker" to the statement we can safely assume racism, no?

Fuuny that someone that speaks Thai so well would incorrectly call an Indian or Korean a Farang.

For good times in Poker I strongly suggest you fly to Manila!

Lots of great big casinos with everything under the sun, games as low as 2,000 Peso NL, tournaments every day, poker clubs, very cute casino hostesses and generally good people gambling. Plus they speak english most of the time.

Return is no more than 6,000-7,000 baht with Cebu. Worth the trip.

Not sure - can't say I've seen many packs of cards on sale in Thailand...

Most Seven-11s and Family Marts sell packs of cards. They often seem to be kept behind the counter with the cigarettes, though, so are hard to spot.

It is lileagal to play cards (in the public) in Thailand. Even for 5 Baht a game...

I can not play poker or any other card game but once I went with 5 Thai women from a Sukhumvit beer bar in their room to play a game. They were very scared someone would know they play cards. So they closed the windows with some towels and opened loud karaoke music... :)

I watched the game maybe about for one hour and I realized the the money (just 10 or 20 Baht for each game) was just wandering around. So I decided to play too... Lost some games and won some games, but when the bunch of 20 notes came to me after some good cards....

"Oh.... sorry, late already! My airplane will go in one hour to Germany! Bye!" :D

Interesting post.

But I would never gamble at a Thai or Cambodian casino. Even the games that should be fair like roulette, if you won big, your health would be at risk after you cashed in your chips.

I think it would be better to head for Macau (cheap flights available) if you want to gamble.

Or Genting Highlands, outside KL in Malaysia.

"Farang, Farang, Farang" is no racist.

It is a general that Thai call Caucasian.

If you were Japanese, for example, I take it then you would have no problem if I referred to you, or in your presence, or directly to you as "Jap, Jap, Jap!

In my extensive experience in Thailand I say that most Thais are in fact blatantly racist and xenophobic and totally incensitive and uncaring about other, particularly white, nationalities' feelings.

I've really had enough of this bs making excuses and down-playing the importance, and told it's a misunderstanding and I've got it all wrong. cr*p! It's racist xenophobia pure and simple.

I dabble on Pokerstars and feel there's something rather fishy about that set up, but nothing as blatant as what you've described. I just can't imagine feeling confident about the legitimacy of gambling anywhere in SE Asia.

i heard of a story where by friends look for each other @ the poker website table, and skype up and proceed to takedown other players

You bet it happens (no pun intended). That's why I quit playing ring games, where people can look for their buddies and collude to take down other players. Instead, I play Sit 'n Go tournmaments, where the seating is random. But to have people sitting at a table in a casino showing cards and discussing hands is unbelievable.

Wrong. It's a general term for "foreigner", originally derived from a French word.

Obviously, not all foreigners are "Caucasian"...LOL

Thanks for the info. It did not even cross my mind that Poipet had a hold em' game. Although looks like Macau and Pokerstars for me :)

You might consider doing some better research.

Okay, then, but how about "Farang bai reow", "Farang go back", "Farang kee-nok", "Farang mai khon", "Farang ngo", "Farang 5 baht", etc., etc.? I bet, such words are spoken there, too.

Why sit down with a table of thai men anyway.... to play poker or to do anything else ??? I would rather sit in a pile of pig shit for a couple of hours. Put 2 Thai's together with 1 farang no matter what they are doing 95 % of the time it will just end up the thai's being racist about the farang. It will always be that way. Not far from the surface in nearly all thai's there is a great hate for any farangs. Weather they be White guys from the UK or Asian Guys from Japan. They dont care. In there eyes you are not thai so they just hate you for that. Sad but Ture

I would guess that the same percentage or more of Falang men , put down Thai men at every turn .

Hi.

I wonder if anyone knows the reason why nobody use the ANZI ATMs over at the poipet side. Whether farangs, khon Thai or casino punters, it seems no one is using it.

Most of the time? I would only play poker if the language chosen is 100% of the time. The few words you don't hear can be killing. Poker rules at a Vegas casino are English only. I watched at a friend of mine's guesthouse as they played poker and they invited me to play. I said no thank you as two of the players were from Finland and couldn't refrain from speaking Finnish at times. Not sure what they were saying but that was the point.

I don't play poker that much and the reason for that is because it is too easy to cheat in. I said this when I declined the game and they pretended to be offended. FWIW any worthwhile casino establishes language rules. It would be funny though if the Thais figured out the Farang knew Thai and were baiting them.

I'd rather play POKER with lady gaga and "POKER" her face, but then again I'm not so sure now after reports mentioned she aint a real woman.

Seriously though guys,if anyone thinks they can have a real honest game of poker when people are talking in a language that you can't understand and the majority of players are Thai or Cambodian, Phillipeno etc, then think again, I've played cards with Thai women and they cheat like hel_l.

I'll only play cards now if all persons speak English and all other languages are banned at the table, one of the reasons I no longer play. It just aint going to happen, not in Asia anyway.
