IanForbes
Are all men having trouble with their sex life? What's with all the ads for Viagra and Cialis? Maybe it's just the sports channels I watch on TV but there seems to be an over abundance of advertisements offering sex pills for men. I see ads for Cialis, Viagra, something called Extends and a few others I've never heard of before. Is there some problem with modern men? I thought that is what beautiful women were for... to keep men interested. The men's sex pills ads seem to have taken over from the ones about women's monthly problems. On top of that there seem to be ads for all sorts of pharmaceuticals to alleviate some imagined or real problem that people supposedly have. Are the pharmacy companies taking over the world? I'm 69 and single, and so far I've been lucky not to need any supplements. And, when I'm in Thailand I lead an active sex life. I'm too old to bother with women in North America. I hate taking ANY pills of ANY sort. There are ALWAYS side effects. I guess good clean living and good genes have helped me. The main point of the topic wasn't so much about sex as it was about pharmaceutical companies creating pills for just about any ailment somebody can dream up... and many that people have never heard of. I reckon that the pharmas are given a task of trying to help a small group of people, say, men with E.D. Then, when they've got something that works, they market the living daylights out of it - the profit per pill is immense, so they can pay for lots of adverts. And it's not just E.D. There's a pill called Zyban to help people stop smoking, which is generally a Good Thing. But it started out as Buproprion, a heavy-duty anti-depressant. Docs noticed that a lot of patients on Buproprion stopped smoking on their own. When the pharma got hold of that, they did some quick tests and got the FDA to approve it - then the marketing started for Zyban. Funny thing is, earlier this year the FDA said that lots of people were having psychiatric side effects - including attempts at and successful suicides. Duh - like no one saw *that* coming, eh. But hey, more money for R&D and for payouts to the shareholders.

bkkjames
I would have thought that Viag wouldn't be as big a seller here as back in the west. (note to self...better rephrase this before Migsy or Sbk see this) I woud have thought that Viag wouldn't be as big a seller here as it is back in the west. I think it has a lot to do with ageing populations around the world. The baby boomers have arrived at that magical age when parts of the body don't work so well anymore. Their numbers will only increase over the next 10 -15 years. I'm not sure what the current age figures are for western countries, but I remember some quote like 40% will be over 45years within the next 10 years for many countries. But that may be wrong. However the current push to increase the pension age in those countries that have pensions is a good indicator of a deluge of greyness. Obesity, alcoholism, and the side effects of prostate cancer treatment may also have some bearing. I can personally confirm the last one. About pharmacy companies - their numbers are getting fewer but larger, and for sure they have budgets larger than many countries. Of course, various pills, potions and stuff designed to promise a better sex life are traded incresingly through porn sites - with virtually no regulation. But its not new, snake oil salesman have been around for a long time.

bobbin
Soooooooooo transparent Mr. Forbes!! Topic heading " Are all men having trouble...." , needing ED medication. zzaa09
Chances are, these 'problems' aren't any more in abundant than they we're 100 years ago. Classic American social engineering combined with marketing. This is uniquely relevent as it applies to the Medical-Pharmaceutical Industrial Complex Mafia. The fabricated and make-believe ailments, conditions, and syndromes are a way of life for most of the accepting public. Easily taken in..... IanForbes
it's because the pharmaceutical companies have never heard of "supermen" like you who don't bother with women in North America and save their few shots for visits to Thailand. I'm certainly no superman, but I DO know that an attractive partner who initiates the process DOES have a positive affect on an old bugger like me. I'm even surprised myself. I know all I NEED is three or four times a week, but sometimes a frisky young partner can change that ratio. I certainly wouldn't find anything near as nice back home. After a week back home, I'm already wishing I was back in Thailand. But, like most men without a viable outlet I have to immerse myself in some other project to keep my mind off women. dondraper
Ever since the swine flu thing, everyone thinks they are clever to be on about how the pharmaceutical companies are evil and make too much money and control the government and how people are sheep and fall for the advertisements and propaganda. I am sure once these people (you) catch something, you will be running to the doctor and popping pills left and right and whining about how the government has not done enough to prepare/prevent this from happening to you. Most of the complaints people have about capitalism are just for show, their actions in real life speak for themselves.

The only pills I take are antibiotics if I have an infection caused by an accident. Most often I just fix myself with first aid. I never whine about anything. I don't go to a doctor more than once every couple of years. I survived growing up at a time when there WERE no penicillin type drugs. The only thing available was sulpha type drugs. If you caught something serious you either survived or died. Those that survived were usually stronger for it and built up their own immune system. When I get sick enough to rely on drugs to keep me alive I'll know it's time to cash in my chips. Today, everyone wants to take the easy way and not accept the consequences for their own actions. There are too many people in this world anyway. A few less wouldn't hurt at all and we could probably use a few more wars and some epidemics to clean out the weaklings. BEENTHEREDONETHAT
Ian At 69 you are to young to realize that as you get older the body does not respond as well as it does when you are young. Someday you too will find that after a couple of times things just don't co-operate any more. So enjoy it well you can. I'm 75 and speak from experience.
