When I visited the US this spring I bought a Kindle 2. Before I left I downloaded several dozen books using Amazon's proprietary wireless system. Since that wireless system is not available outside the US how can I download books from Amazon here. I read in the Bangkok Post that Kindles are now being sold in Thailand and I assume the downloads are via the Internet.

You just download them to your computer from amazon and transfer them over the usb cable. Easy.

Are you sure that works in Thailand? Amazon knows if you are logging on from outside the US and they are operating under specific copyright restrictions.

yes it works been doing it for 6 months. Amazon do not restrict your content traveling with your kindle.

They even state on their website that to use your kindle overseas u need to download to your computer and transfer. You just go to your kindle page and selecte download to computer connect the kindle and copy the files over.

My kindle has never been in the USA from day 1. Obviously whispernet does not work but turning it off gives u more battery power anyway.

Although it gets a bit more complicated purchasing content with a NON USA credit card. However Entropay Visa and Amazon gift vouchers work very well.

I am intrigued by the Kindle. I have resisted buying one beacause I hate to buy books I cannot share after reading and Kindle books cannot be transferred. I do not want to argue with anybody on this. I understand the reason, and electronic transfers can get out of control, screw the publisher, the author, etc. I am not unsympathetic.

Be that as it may, I had this idea for sharing books in a legal small scale way. My idea is to form a "Kindle Club." Each member would download 10 or 15 books of his or her choice. After reading, contact club members (book list included) to say the Kindle is now available for trade. Then members would simply trade Kindles. Granted, you would now have somebody else's choices to read, but I find that here, I am reading a wider variety anyway. And should one see a book list that was totally unappealing (like 15 Harlequin Romances), simply avoid that trade.

Is anybody interested in this concept? Our club could even have a Kindle Forum right here.

I wonder if there isn't someway to get this device registered with CAT/Hutch to allow it to use their CDMA network in Thailand, that would make the device fully functional. I know for example my USB CDMA adapter has no SIM card and is simply registered by it's hardware ID to access the network and linked to my account to pay the bill each month.

Martin

P.S. If anyone knows where their selling these in Bangkok would love to know, interested to pick one up, MBK perhaps?

Not possible with whispernet and kindle. It is more complicated than that as Amazon pay verizon per download etc.

I know they have a very clever charging model for it in the US, but at the end of the day it's must still be a standard CDMA device, with an ESN number that could be registered with CAT/Hutch to allow the device to logon to their network.

I know we can download books from Amazon to the computer and then transfer them to the Kindle, but what about newspapers and magazines? If you subscribe to Newsweek for example, in the US it would just appear via Whispernet on the day it is released. How would that work here?

Same way via your computer then onto the Kindle. Available to download on the day of release to your computer and transfer to your kindle. A Procedure that will take less than 5 mins total.

I subscribe to Audible audio books. Once in a while one of my selections is not available for my area. I emailed Audible for an explanation. It was explained that rights depend on who owns the book rights. Different companies own distribution rights in different areas. Audible has no control concerning distribution areas.

I would guess that Amazon has the same problem.

All kindles are american registered. you can download ANY book from amazon US site available for the kindle worldwide aslong as u pay with a us credit card or us gift vouchers.

Received my Kindle and the most amazing thing about this devise is it's not amazing.

By saying that I mean it just works! No fiddling, no fuss, download your ebooks into it and thats it, turn it on and start to read, when you are finished reading just lay it down like you would a paper book. When you want to start reading again, flip the switch to wake it up (if it has been put down for an extended time) and start reading from where you left off. Actually in this sense it is better than a paper book as unless you use a book mark, I am always trying to find just where I left off.

For any users here in LOS, check out Calibre for all your magazines.

In short, I could not be happier with this thing.

Look up the website for "Calibre"

Download this free program. it's the best way to get books and many, many newspapers and magazines onto your kindle or any other Ereader, I use the Sony 505 and travel the world with about 250 books and other things on it.

Thank you, DocDuei.

I've been thinking / wondering / pondering about buying a Kindle.

The mention of Calibre has just saved me the hassle and expense.

I'd never heard of "Calibre", but seems to do everything for eBooks.

An excellent video demo is here: http://shrinkify.com/1837

Found a website selling them in Thailand. I think this is the one mentioned in the news article.

Anyone got one and care to comment? Are they worth having? How about the K2 vs the DX?

DX is nice for the coffee table. However for ease of carrying around outside and less wait on your arms. I would go with the kindle 2 and amazon leather cover.

That website 14900 baht new reduced price thats US$450.00....rip off.

He has just got them off ebay for $300 and marking them up. You could go to ebay yourself or indeed get it shipped FREE by amazon to shipito.com (Open an account) then get it forwarded here to thailand via fedex.

For a total cost of $320.00 a saving over $130.00 on that guys prices.....He is probably doing exactly the same thing i suggest here but making $130-$140 profit...nice try...

and the DX at us$720.00 - jeez I am all for importing hard to obtain products to thailand for sale....but lets be realistic if he was marking up by $50-$60 ok fair enough - but don't take the piss.

No, unfortunately Kindles can only be purchased in the USA. Amazon will not ship overseas either. Sony makes an e-reader as well.

Amazon now ships internationally (but not to Thailand) as they released a new version using HSDPA/EDGE/GPRS (AT&T in the US) rather than the old EVDO (Sprint in the US) version.

I got mine sent to HK, and it's working in Thailand, whispernet and everything, with no problems...
