I may need to go to Chiang Mai for a couple days from BKK,

Since I have limited time whats the best way to go ?

Fly , but how many days advance do I need to get ac decent price?

and how far is the Chiang Mai airport from the city center?

Or overnight train, I think its about 12 hours, has anyone taken it lately, can you sleep decent ?

Its not so much the money since the plane is fairly cheap ,

its the time involved and that I can arrive at a decent time in the morning to get something done and not blow the whole day traveling.

Any ideas appreciiated

Thanks

Discount airfare does not change so much as to be a major factor in late bookings but sometimes you can get real low price when booked early. There are now good connections with both Nok and Airasia and the airport is in town so should not be more than 10 minutes to where you want to go.

Train is not easy to sleep on for me but you might not have a problem. I would fly these days unless I wanted to see the countryside on a day train.

I sleep very well on overnight trains, the question you have to ask yourself is "do I like Trains or planes better?" look back at your childhood and remember which airfix kits you prefered, mind you a moot point if you just built racing cars.

I flew from CM to BKK, just turned up at the airport, after some shopping in the morning and some lunch, and was on a less than half full 747 half an hour later, in BKK to get room and then out for some early evening drinks. Flight cost B1100 and there was some Thai celebrity on board creating some in-flight entertainment.

Oh, and I got a Tuk Tuk from the centre, I think it was B100, not far anyway.

Definitely fly. Will be about 1,300 with taxes. AA have 2/3 flights a day and Nok Air, 4. One-to-go, Oreint Thai also fly here. If you take the train, get a 2nd class lower sleeper in an air-con carriage...much better chance of sleeping.

well to let you know , I took Thai air , booked the day before about 4500 baht return.

No problems , short lines, even shorter if you have a United Gold card.

small snack and orange juice,

luggage and packages arrived both sides OK...

What can I say, no problems !

thanks for your help,

PS....there were signs for a bus around for 250baht , Chaing Mai to Bangkok,

so if you end up broke at least you can get back to bangkok cheap !

I usually pay 2100 baht each way between CNX and BKK. Are those cheaper flights available, can you book them on internet and in advance, are the planes reliable? Half price is half price.

The best way on the train is of course the overnight air/con cabin lower berth, but at about 1150 baht, it ain't cheap. There's not much to see.

The Chiang Mai airport is close to town, but I live close enough and pay 120 baht including the luggage, in a tuktuk, door to door. Is my boyfriend's brother in law just charging extra for family?
