UOB Gets Verified By Visa

Featured Replies

one of my pet peeves having a UOB visa card is that they are not "verified by visa". This renders the card more or less useless for any internet purchases. Air Asia for instance.

Not sure what this VbV stuff exactly is, but my countless complaints (basically everytime I pay the invoice :) ) seem to have gone high up enough to change something. My latest complaint mail was answered with:

Verify by Visa service will tentatively be available in September this year.

Will keep you posted!

Verified by visa is a system managed by your bank (NOT Visa!) where there is an extra layer of security introduced.

Basically this extra layer of security proves you really are the owner of the credit card.

When you want to make a purchase, after entering your card details the payment gateway will transfer you to a page of the issuing bank, where, depending on that bank, and extra verification system will be used, which after succeeding, will return you to the merchants gateway where then the actual purchase/payment will be completed.

How your issuing bank handles the verification differs from bank to bank. Some banks will issue you with a little calculator sized device which will be needed during the verification procedure, other banks works with an extra password/pin code you have to create with them etc...

Indeed most on-line merchants and payment gateways will require verified by visa or the equivalent from mastercard to process payments.

I have the Bangkok bank VBV system and it works well enough.

This is good news.

I've had a UOB credit card since 2004 and was on the verge of cancelling. They've just sent me a shiny new one with a chip so I decided to hang on to it.

It's strange though, this VBV business. Earlier this year I tried to buy a ticket with British Airways and the card was rejected. I call UOB and they said "oh yes, cannot use on this website, UOB not verified by visa." But Quantas accepted the card for what was essentially the same flight.

I'm sure 1-2-go airline used to accept the UOB card but now they don't?

That's exactly the issue...BA apparently uses VbV and Quantas not.
