Hello.

I have a 1 year student visa (have to head to immigration in bangkok every 3 months to renew)

It is a single entry though, so what do I do if I want to travel say to Vietnam for a weekend?

Can I leave and come back and still have my student visa?

Seems you are on an "Extension of Stay". You would need to get a re-entry permit at immigration, or that would be canceled. You would have to start the visa process again. A single re-entry is 1000 Baht and multi re-entry is 3800 Baht.

The re-entry permit keeps the current "permitted to stay until date" valid, so you would have to re-enter before that expires.

Thank you.... Any tips/links for my visit to the immigration office? What about the visa for Americans to enter Vietnam?

What office? If Bangkok you can submit by email and save time. You will need a 4x6cm photo and believe copies of passport data/stamp and probably departure card. Although they do not mention the copies so may not need. Read right column.

You can get visa here in Bangkok or use the web to have a travel service provide at airport on arrival.

Okay, A couple more questions:

My friend from the US w/ a US passport is coming to Vietnam too. Can he obtain a visa via the above link as well? or should he get one while in the USA?

I just got back from immigration today. I got my visa extended and also got a single re-entry permit for 1000 baht.

Does this single entry mean I can only goto 1 country and I have to come back to Thailand? or does it mean for example, I could leave Thailand, visit vietnam, cambodia, japan, russia and iraq and if I come back to Thailand before the expiry I'm okay?

Thanks

The link I provided was for Bangkok Immigration to file a request for re-entry permit. It was not for any visa.

If he wants a visa to Vietnam have him google - there are travel agents that provide on-line visa service - you pay by credit card and when you arrive present the paper for the awaiting visa. But am sure most travel agents in the US/or he could send his passport to Washington to obtain a visa also.

Another Re-entry permit question...

MY single entry ED visa expires NOV 17th

I have obtained a single re-entry permit as I plan to go to Vietnam in september

If I also want to goto Japan at the end of this month and return to thailand would I be able to use up the single re-entry permit, and head to immigration and get another one to go to Vietnam?

Is there a limit to single re-entry permits I can use while on an ED visa..

Come to think of it I should have just got the 3800 baht multiple re-entry permit as it seems friends are heading to SE asia quite frequently... thanks for the patience in these redundant questions...

No limit, but once you go over 2 trips the multiple re-entry becomes more economic.

4 trips I think. 1000 baht for single re-entry permit v 3800 baht for multiple.
