Hi,

I have a retirement extension that will expire together with its multi-entries re-emtry permit on October 4

For health reasons I am out of Thailand now and will only be back early November

My current extension of stay and re-entry permit will have expired

My intention is to arrive with a 30 days stamp and convert it to a 1 year extension on the basis of retirement

Can this be done assuming that I have the following :

1. At least 21 days remaining on my period of stay (30 days stamp)

2. At least 800k baht in a Thai bank account for more than 3 months before application day

Anything else required ?

Thanks

This is what the Immigration site says. http://www.immigration.go.th/nov2004/en/ba...p?page=service#

You should be OK. They might send you to Bangkok to change status as some local offices will not do it.

In case of overstaying in Thailand, application could not be submitted.

Application for Visa Status Alteration. (TM.86)

Application for visa. (TM.87)

Copy of passport entries.

4 X 6 cm. Photograph.

Application fee of 2,000 baht.

• A guarantee letter from bank in Thailand showing that the applicant has an account of not less than 800,000 baht, and

• Copy all pages of bank passbook and

• A document proving foreign remittance(SWIFT) Or

A guarantee-letter from The Embassy or Consulate, proving the monthly pension or income of the applicant not less than 65,000 baht per month. Or

The total amount of money from the pension and bank account as stated above not less than 800,000 baht.

You would be well served to obtain a non immigrant O visa for entry - or you may not be allowed on the plane. Without non immigrant visa you first have to pay for conversion to one for 2,000 baht using proof of financial papers and then, two months later, obtain the extension of stay, again using financial papers. With the non immigrant visa entry you only have to make one visit 60 days after return.

From your post understand a visa may be a problem if in Tokyo (and not Japanese or a resident) so you may not have a choice - and you may be forced to either obtain onward travel or fly to another country first. The last person who posted faced with Japan visa issue problem went to Korea first to obtain visa and then onward to Thailand.

Thanks Lite Beer and Lopburi 3

1. Yes a visa (other than transit or tourist) in Japan is not easy at all if not married to a Thai

2. If I obtained a tourist visa, would I still have to first convert to Non-O and then wait to apply for the 1 year extension or would they do the 1 year extension at the same time as the conversion from tourist to Non-O?

3. My other option, but very expensive, would be to do a very short Tokyo-Thailand-Tokyo trip before October 4 just to extend one year

Any other possibilities ?

The tourist visa would remove the airline boarding question as you can travel one-way on any visa. But would still require a change and they do not seem to do at the same time currently - want you to wait 60 days. But that may still vary from office/officer as it did before but seems to be more consistent with the wait period now. But am not sure even a tourist visa is easy in Japan - but should cost nothing if it is.
