Democrat candidate Thani Thaugsuban has cruised to an easy win in a by-election in this southern province to succeed his brother Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban in the lower house.

Mr Thani yesterday won 122,032 votes - far ahead of the 24,624 votes secured by the runner-up from the Puea Thai Party, Sompol Vichaidit, a younger brother of former party leader Yongyuth.

The turnout yesterday was very low at just 47.66% of eligible voters. Elections have been held frequently in recent years, and voters might be bored, said Boonsong Techamanisatit, Surat Thani deputy governor and provincial election commission chairman.
