Now don't get your feathers in a ruff...

What I was saying is that most have it prior to being hired. ( pre hire requirement )

The FBI Natl Academy is that course and is a requirement for promotion to staff level assignments at almost any agency. University of Kentucky runs a simular one that is also accepted, but dosen't have the "oomph" factor as does the FBI school.

Read further on what I wrote...I do not know of any sheriff in the US that is hired without having gone through it or is on the list to attend.

As I wrote...99.9% come from applicants that retired/come from other law enforcement agencies.

Non law enforcement types are not hired as "full service" sheriffs.

Not nitpicking..but,

You don't need Miranda warnings to stop a vehicle..or even to make an arrest. Not even on a "Terry" stop.

Well done Howard Miller and your crew yet more bad publicity for Thailand what are you going to do next have lunch with Gary Glitter????????? :)

Very pleased to see Herr Howard flagrantly breaking Thai law in episode six (13:27 in to the programme). Love to hear his explanation.

Actually, I really wouldn't.

I've only watched this far ... he may break the law again (let's face it, he has before ... on camera).

''DO NOT RESIST US!!!! DO NOT RESIST US!!!!''

''Sorry, mate. I'm deaf, can't hear you and don't speak English anyway ...''

I am pleased to see you are analysing my actions so carefully, would you like a signed photo of me. I have fully clothed or naked (guess that breaks another law regarding distribution of pornographic images!).

Its only pornographics if its a naked or dressed pic of you and others engaged in a sex act.

Can be arranged if the price is right :)

Has anyone else noticed that the best All newly elected U.S. sheriffs are sent to a national training school.[/color]

False.

Really? Full service sheriffs do indeed have to go to the course sponsored by the National Association of Sheriffs. There are a few incentives;

1. The county's liability insurance provider makes it a requirement.

2. Funding requirements from the federal and state agencies that say no money unless the sheriff goes.

If one wishes to nitpick, yes one does not have to be trained prior to taking the office. However, I'd suggest you check the country rules about procedures once the person is elected. I'd like you to provide some examples of sheriffs that did not take the course. Do you honestly think a local county wants to take on the liability of some yahoo running about in a police car stopping people that has no idea what a Miranda warning is or what the parameters of a police chase are? Do you think a small county wants to forgo the funds for policing by not sending the sheriff to the school? I don't think one would see a hick sheriff in the armpit of Virginia firing his weapon at a moving vehicle as was done in episode 5.

NAS is just like CALEA.

NAS's program for new sheriffs is 2 weeks in duration. A whole whopping 2 weeks...

Not a requirement, just a certification enity that collects money from departments so they can put little fancy decals on the patrol vehicles for a shit load of money. Then once a year you can have the fat pugy "inspectors" come around and insure your agency is up to their standards, so to speak, so if your agency gets hauled into court for lawsuits you can spout out.."well, every other agency does this.." "Standardized" so to speak...

Other than that, it's a social function for group parties in places like Las Vegas...

I've watched all the episodes shown on bravo to date. tbh my reaction is blank....just run of the mill stuff....no real attempt to fight the thai stereotypes eg 'dirty old man in pattaya'.

last night's episode showed a 72yo guy bigging up the fact he can chat up 20yo girls & some LB's in chiang mai describing how tourists like them to 'suck la c*ck' and '<deleted> le ass'.

vomit.

I thought the 72 your old( he actually looks more like 90 something) says a lot about why older males come to Thailand in particular Pattaya. The old man made the point in effect that any attempt to even talk to a young woman or flirt with her back in his own country would be viewed with suspicion and derision. Here in Thailand he has no such problem.

Says more about the Ageism and Victorian attitude to sex back in the UK, eh?!

Sex is fun and for fun and should be enjoyed by all adults whatever their age and without guilt, even if it might often be a business transaction.

Britain and most other countries can learn a lot about how Thailand does things and their attitude to life and living.

And your 'vomit' remarks merely shows how prudish and restricted you are in your world-view.

:) well, that has made my day - I've been called alot of things in my time...a sleaze...a drunkard...a pervert...but never a prude. thank you.

my vomit remark was directed at the same old 5hite being included in a thailand docu eg pattaya pensioners hand-in-hand with issan tarts. myself and anyone I know related to thailand would love to wipe that image from the onlooking world.

take bkk for example, there are plenty of normal bars/clubs where young western guys go and mingle with the thai crowds eg RCA, some of the western guys could even be described as good-looking and care about their appearance but time after time any thai related docu returns to the slimy old patters pensioner with the chang vest and the socks and sandals combo.

that, my friend, triggered my 'vomit' remark.

Stephen – Give Vera Productions a break. If you’d faked the sound on a programme viewed by hundreds of thousands of people worldwide and which led to the arrest and imprisonment of a man, and the inevitable conclusion that your supposedly upstanding and respected company is given to making stuff up, what would you do – leave it up there for all to see or cover it up? Begs the question why Vera Productions didn’t move quite so smartly to block the entire BTIT episodes which have been available on You Tube for some six weeks now. The Thai saying Som Nam Naa comes to mind. Vera Productions has dished it out to corporations like Coca Cola, see here – http://www.channel4.com/news/articles/disp...ocacola/1068847 – and the UK government http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ptzml1qQvZE but doesn’t seem to like it when the boot’s on the other foot.

I am responding to your statement that the show somehow explained how to file a false insurance claim (see your quoted text in bold above). It only showed the two (presumed innocent, by the way) youths filing a police report for missing goods, something that happens legitimately quite often. None of the actual details of filing the claim in their home country (i.e. the actual "fraud" part) were explained. It just alluded to the fact that others had done that in the past (not a shocking revelation).

The show hardly gave away any useful information on how to get away with insurance fraud, so I suppose I'll turn it around and say I'm not sure what you are getting at.

Yeah, I imagine the "filing a claim" part is really tricky and nobody will be able to figure out that part of it by themselves.

The tourist Volunteer goes "That's how the cops catch them. They go to your hotel and 80% of the time, the goods they are reporting stolen will be in their room"... It does not take a genius to figure out

1. Stash goods somewhere.

2. Go to police

3. Wait 5 hours

4. Get Receipt

5. File Claim back home (apparently the really complicated part)

...

lets see if all of that soaks in.

Filing a claim is not guaranteed to get you 100% of the value of your goods. In fact, you might not get any of your goods. All claims are subject to some level of scrutiny, but that isn't even the point. The point is, none of that is what happened on the show. What happened on the show is commonplace in Thailand (a foreigner has items stolen, and reports this to the police). The fact that the show mentioned that this is sometimes used by people planning on committing insurance fraud is hardly a shocker, but seems to be what you are complaining about.

Perhaps the following articles should be taken down, lest they result in more fraud:

The same could be said about your list. Trivial to come up with that. It's not like the show is presenting novel information.

And that's what I was trying to say in my post, and I apologise that my english sense of humour was lost in translation there. Vera Productions failed to convince Virgin Media that BTITT was a bad idea for a title for the series after I protested in the strongest terms. Vera Productions were wrong to fake the audio in the JJ scene, and to cut the balance from the original edit I saw. I am WITH you - not against you in that post. What I'm saying is Vera Productions is a company that makes programmes exposing wrongdoing in serious documentaries - like the one on the UK's Channel 4 about the Coca Cola corporation. And they pillory the UK government. How can we trust their programmes, expecially the Dispatches documentaries for Channel 4, if we know they're prepared to fake and sensationalise - as the raw footage has proved? My post was in support of yours - by blocking the video on You Tube Vera Productions is attempting to stifle the truth - which is hypocritical of them, given the programmes they make.

I can see where you are coming from and I am not condoning the editing or the censorship.

But if you take both the edited and broadcast clips in total you come to the same conclusion - there was scamming and threats of violence. Faking something and giving incorrect balance is not the same thing.

I oppose the giving of incorrect balance but then other forums have been accused of that in the past and with justification. At least here on Thaivisa posters are ( within obvious constraints) allowed to post their views. Posts are not deleted for not being " flavour of the month" with the powers that be.

For an unbiased account go to the Drummond site for a recent blog posting. He presents both sides but then he is a journalist.
