Although I cannot speak Thai or Laotian for that matter, I get a sense in Thailand that there is discrimination against or dislike of Laotian people. Does anyone have any opinion on this? Also is there much obvious difference that people know of between dating a Laotian lady in Thailand and a Thai lady in Thailand? If this has been covered elsewhere, I would appreciate redirection to that location.

I use to date a woman from Nongkhai who had much (not very nice) to say about women from Laos. I also met a farang teacher who first taught for 8 years in Thailand, followed by 12 years in Laos. He spoke perfect Lao, Thai and English. To sum up his remarks - he felt Lao women were less concerned about money and more true to their desire for love then their Thai neighbors. That being said, I put virtually no weight in these types of generalizations.

From my experience, Thai's tolerate Burmese, also Lao and hate Cambodians.

That's right. You'll hear it all over Thailand. Problems with the Kmer, acceptance of Lao and Burmese. But trust your own feeligs, there is light and shaddow anywhere.

It might depend on which part of Thailand are you living and which Thais are you talking to.

For what i know,Thais are condescending about Laotians, despise the Khmers and detest the Burmese, but they reluctantly respect the Vietnamese.

I've only ever met one laotian Girl so can't be of much help statisically. My gut feeling was she was a bit more traditional and less materialistic than some girls I've met. She's on a work permit. maybe nothing but I've noticed a couple of Thai's males grab her arm and sort of push her in the general direction of the kitchen when they want to order food or something. Like she's a slave or something. Something she clearly doesn't like and something I've never seen a Thai do to a Thai lady. So maybe they are a bit more inferior in the Thai males thinking. I don't know. She's doesn't seem too fond of Thai Males either :) . maybe its my imagination. Anyway, I digress ......

A real difference is you can' t have a sexual relationship with a Laotian Girl in lao unless your married. its a prison sentence or something more harsh.

If the girls in Thailand then she's going to be either on a work permit and probably have her movements restricted or be illegal or have a passport which I believe gives 30 days entry to thailand. So a lot less simple unless she happens to have a Thai passport for some reason.

In my experience, Thai women and men love looking down their noses at people. They love looking down on Laos, Cambodia etc. But when they go to England, Japan or Korea Etc, they hate when they're looked down on! The amount of times I've heard that English people are rude and look down on people. I simply say 'It's not nice, is it?'

My experience of Laotian Ladies is that they are much more humble. They appear traditional and don't care much for material items. Most Thais are obsessed with I-phones and Luis Vuitton bags etc.

I've never asked a Laotian girl what she likes to do in her free time. I wouldn't be surprised if her answer was somewhat similar to a Thai person 'I like sleeping, eating and playing video games' If she says she enjoys the work of Tchaikovsky, bag her! Or if you're like most farangs here and don't enjoy or participate in decent conversation with your other half, run!

I think Lao women look pretty in their traditional skirts :) Very friendly as well, I was 'velly handsom' in Vientienne as well, but this time maybe they actually meant it?

One of several reasons that I posed the question was that I witnessed something similar. I was out for lunch with a group which included some Thai men. The head dude was ordering the drinks and food in Thai language, and he was getting more and more angry with the waitress. She seemed very humble and very nice. He then started to verbally rip into her and she was nearly in tears. Then we all up and left the restaurant! When I asked what was going on the main explanation was that "she was Laotian" and did not understand the order.

Thais are very discriminatory, socially and culturally. In my experience, working for more than a decade in both Thailand and Laos, they do look down on the Laos people as being "country bumpkins." This is not necessarily an unfair description as Laos is less developed. This, however, makes it, and its people, extremely charming and humble. I have enjoyed greater hospitality and generosity from Laos friends than I have from Thai friends.

My wife is Lao. I find her to be much more down to earth than your average Thai yet she has the same beautiful physical features and cultural leanings as Thai people. Also her relatives have never given me a bull$hit buffalo story. It seems when Thai people talk to her and figure out she is Laos there is a look of disappointment and slight disdain but I never experienced anything too condescending with her. It might help that she speaks perfect Thai.

I find it interesting that some posters will discuss how the Thais look down on people but then go and do it themselves in their very next breath.

But perhaps I misunderstand their intent and its not to insult the Thais, merely empathize with the attitude?

"Let the cards fall as they may"! I am interested in everyones opinion on this, and opinions, by definition, are generalizations and impressions. If you have an alternative opinion, then let us hear it. In the end it will all just be 'food for thought'.

Well in pattaya its full of laos women, just wait til the laos music starts up and see them all get excited, :) .as for cambodians being hated ,i doubt it, most people around surin/buri ram consider themselves khymer almost, burmese, possibly,.my inlaws live near ubon ratchathani and are not adverse to giving food and old clothes to khymer people,

I think this must be Thais from special areas of Thailand.

Probably snobby, or wanna be hi-so people from Bangkok area.

I doubt the hills tribes in the north will look down on them.

Same goes for the southern provinces, as they have their own problems to solve.

Not to talk about the people along the borders to the north, east, and west.

My wife is from the north east, and they joke all the time about the fact that they are from Laos, speak Laos, and eat good Laos food. So I was not surprised to read somewhere that a big portion of people from that region of Thailand have roots, and still have distant relatives in Laos.

Lao people look more like Central Thais to me. I think Lao are ethnically part Chinese like the Vietnamese. Don't think Lao people look like Isaan at all. Isaan people look more Khmer to me. Just an observation.

Soloman, A quick update on my very limited experience of Loa Girls.

I still maintain that the girl I'm talking about is probably the sweetest thing I've met, and very traditional etc. etc.

Its also quite clear beyond all reasonable doubt that this girl has atleast 3 Thai boyfriends supporting her in different capacities, Mia Noi, Gik etc. I've met two of them. As I say very Traditional :D Traditions are Traditions , simple as that.

The Girl swears its not true though as do all her Thai friends. As if the truth matters here anyway right. :)

Actually heard the opposite Thai(s) tolerate Lao/Khmer but absolutely detest Burmese.

From the many Thais I've heard/talked to over the years, most Thais pretty much look down on all three of these neighbours about equally.

We all have opinions, nothing wrong in that.I would never insult thais but will speak my mind on how middle class thais treat non white people, its endemic in society here, and most racism is from Bangkok including MANY farangs.

My views are based on 7 years living in Thailand and visiting many places, and thats why i hate Bangkok so much, with their snobbery.I dont even believe that Bangkok is representitve of Thailand as The Land Of Smiles, unlike many other wonderful places.
