BBC:-

Two soldiers have been shot dead and three people injured in a gun attack on an army checkpoint in south Thailand.

The pre-dawn attack, near the southern border of Narathiwat province, has been blamed on Islamist insurgents.

At least 10 rebels are reported to have opened fire on the checkpoint before fleeing in pickup trucks.

The five-year insurgency by Muslims seeking greater autonomy in the southern regions of Thailand has so far cost more than 3,000 lives.

Two soldiers killed, six police, residents wounded in Narathiwat, Yala attacks

NARATHIWAT, Aug 23 (TNA) – Unidentified gunmen opened fire at a police checkpoint in the violence-plagued province of Narathiwat, killing two officials and wounding four others.

Some eight gunmen on two pick-up trucks attacked the police checkpoint in Takbai district, killing a soldier. Two policemen, a soldier and a defense volunteer were wounded and sent to hospital. The soldier was later pronounced dead at hospital.

Spikes were strewn and a fake bomb was placed on a road to prevent officials coming to help officers who were injured. The police are hunting the attackers.

Meanwhile, a home of a police officer from Takbai police station, opposite the checkpoint, was also attacked with a hand grenade. No one was wounded in the incident but the roof and window glass on the second floor of the house were damaged.

Meanwhile, in nearby Yala province, a couple was wounded in a shooting attack in Krongpinang district. Shot while driving a motorcycle to tap rubber early Sunday morning, they were hospitalised. Their conditions are unknown.

It is believed both attacks are related to the southern unrest which has claimed more than 3,500 lives since it erupted in January 2004. (TNA)

Hello, the south is a difficult place to live and no place for a tourist. My condolences to the families, and I hope the conflict there will be solved soon so more people will not be killed there.

I have a couple questions

1. What would make this stop?

2. Does this <deleted> spill over into Bangkok ever?

1. Sharia state in the south

2. Not yet
