does anyone know about a teaching license being a required document to get a 1 year extension on a non immigrant O spousal VISA? My school in Udon said the ministry of education has required immigration to demand it. But my understanding is I'm here for my wife not for the job. I don't have to work??

Anybody know about this?

Thanks ahead for the response,

Dave

If you go to immigration for an extension of stay based on marriage they don't require the teachers license. Only when you you go for an extension of stay based on teaching you will need to shhow a teachers license at some immigration offices.

Note that for an extension of stay based on marriage you will need to show an income of 40,000 a month OR 400,000 in a Thai bankaccount.

Do you know if this is the case in Nong Khai?

I have not gone yet, but will next week. My thai wife spoke with immigration on the phone last week they said I need to bring my work permit. on my work permit it says i teach. She told them it was for a spousal non O. I have the money requirements.

thanks for the response,

You only have to show a work permit if you are using tax payments to prove your income.

Not needed for money in bank or if you have an income letter from your embassy.

Unless you do an extension based upon employment as a teacher would you have to show a license.

I can't tell you for sure, but believe you will have no problems. So far only a few immigration offices require the teachers license and I don't recall Nong Khai being one of them. From Nan I know that they require the license, but only when you ask for an extension of stay as a teacher. Not if you ask for an extension of stay based on marriage to a Thai.

In any case, you can get a temporary license through the school in about 2 to 3 weeks and you can always get a 60 day extension on your current permission to stay as being married to a Thai.

If you are not using tax payments as proof of income do not show or mention a work permit.

Never show immigration more than is required to get anything done there.

I read somewhere else on the web that if I am currently licensed in another country, I am, than the requirement is waived. Have you heard this?

Probably yes, but you might want to ask it in our teaching section where there are more knowledgable people about this.

You are still required to get a teacher's license at some point. IF you have an "Education" degree from another country, this means you do not have to take and pass the 4 tests currently on the table required for non-education degree holders. You are not exempt from having to get a teacher's license, just the testing since you have an Education Degree (assuming this).

You will still be required to complete a weekend long culture class as part of the teacher licensing process.

Regards,

Good information, I do have an education Masters degree.

Do you know about the temporary license? With my qualifications (current teaching license from US and teaching degree) would I have to take any course before getting a temp license? I've read it's valid for 2 years? During that 2 year period I could take the culture course.

thanks for the help,

Dave
