Having just gone through all the hassle of opening a bank account with Siam Commercial Bank, I have just found out that the debit card they issue is useless online. Which means I will not be doing my future banking with this bank.

Does anyone know any other banks that will issue a debit card that can be used online ? Apart from Bangkok Bank as this is the bank I want to move away from.

I have been with Bangkok Bank for the last 6 or 7 years so im not upto date with the rest of the banks.

Thanks

I have both Visa and Mastercard credit cards from Siam Commercial. The only way I could have them as a foreigner was to open a separate fixed savings account and deposit an amount in cash equivalent to my preferred credit limit for the cards. The savings book is kept at the branch as a guarantee for payment. My branch manager offered this option. Perhaps you should discuss it with yours. In the meantime interest has accrued in this account which I am able to withdraw if I wish as long as the balance doesn't fall below the credit limit. Suits me fine.

Hi trd, my query was for a a debit card (ATM card), not a credit card.

If SCB are so behind the times and are unable to offer a debit card to be used online, there will be no further discussions. I will be closing the account and they will not see any business from me.

It amazes me that they are not able to offer something that Bangkok Bank has been able to offer for the past 6 years. In my opinion they are a complete joke !

Hopefully people will see this thread before they go through the process of opening an account with them. My advice, dont do it if you intend to use your ATM card online !

If you go to the Krung Thai Bank, they can issue an ATM VISA debit card with your embossed name and a photo at extra cost. Then you can use this card online.

You need a farang friendly KTB don't let stupid and lazy staff fob you off with excuses.

The problem with Thai banks, is they hate opening farang accounts because of all the hassle and they would rather just give you misinformation or fob you off with work visa requirements etc.

Most banks can offer credit cards to farang if you deposit a cash equivalent bond. But it is a big hassle and difficult to do.

Keep trying.

I have just about everything they would ask for as a way of fobbing me off, visa, work permit etc.. So I dont see this bit being a problem. I basically just need to know which bank has a real debit card that works online, so I dont waste my time opening the account.

I might give KTB a try.

A credit card is not an option, the need to deposit the equivalent of your credit amount into an account defeats the whole purpose of having a credit card.

Kasikorn K-Web Shopping Card is what you need. Open a savings account, apply for online banking, then apply for the shopping card. You will then be issued a virtual Visa account # and the amount charged is debited form your savings account. Good to go... :)

I opened a Kasikorn Bank account about 2 years ago in ISSAN, I told them i wanted their cyberbanking online service also, the account is a regular savings account which i manage online, and with the said account i set up an online k-web shoping card, which is basically a debit card online with a different number than my plastic card, i have it linked to paypal, e-bay and can make any online purchases i want via the k-web card...oh and you set the limit on the e-web card up and down as and when you like, online with your relative password....when you make a purchase online you receive very quickly notification of any transactions via your email....all kasikorn banks do this wether you are is issan or bangkok or anywhere in thailand... :)

hope this helps, just print this post out and take it with you to k bank and tell them that this is what you want, oh and i opened mine with a tourist visa and passport and £150 at the time...

Been with KTB for quite a few years now. And very happy about this move. Opened the account at the (very) small branch at Fortune Tower (left hand side going from the hotel lobby to the shopping mall) and dealing mainly at their main branch of Sukhumvit. Staff dedicated, efficient, and... YES many of them speak do English.

You will be able to do online transfers to/from other Thai bank accounts from the actual savings account, not from the Webcard itself (unless you send a charge to Paypal or something similar). For incoming/outgoing "online" transfers from banks outside Thailand, it is not so easy. You can easily wire into your Thai account but wiring that money out again will require paperwork as set by the Bank of Thailand. I would only wire in what you plan to use here and leave the rest in the UK. Cheers.

If in BKK, Kasikorn @ soi 33 sukhumvit.

Óutside of BKK, hard graft..... :)

Can confirm availability of debit card. However, Kasikorn's debit card is useless online all the same.

So am I right in assuming that with Kasikorn it is not the actual debit card (i.e. ATM card) that you use online, but in fact a separate "virtual" card ? Which will have a completely separate number than the debit card ?

Correct. :)

It looks like 007 wasn't given enough info.

If the K- Web card is issued by Visa, can I assume it will work with websites that ask for a "Verified by Visa" password.

Not sure why you say that virtual debit card is useless online. I have no problem with paying for hotels and flights online, which for me is the only reason to use it. It might indeed give trouble on other purchases if you do not get visa verified, but supposedly that is easy to do, but did not do that myself and still have no troubles with hotels and flights.

I recommend KASIKORN.

I opened a savings book account with ATM card, Internet banking and an on*line DEBIT CARD.

The first part was the simple - the forms for the Savings Book account and was immediately issued a Visa Debit card that I can use in shops. It has no raised numbers, and name is Priviledged Customer. For 100 Baht and a Photo, you can get one with your name on is (and YOUR address on its database records) and I believe raised numbers.

At the same time I opened and internet banking option. Simple form and the login emailed to me the next day.

Once logged and established, I applied on-line for their "WEB CARD"

This appeared a couple of days later in the sidebar of your internet banking screen.

It gives a normal 16 digit number, a CCV validity number and and expiry day. There was no physical card issued.

You write down this information when you need it, so you can write it on your order.

NOW HERE IS THE INTRESTING PART.

When you ORDER something on-line, when the request for money reached Kasikorn, they email you the transaction details and give you THREE DAYS to challange the payment.

In three days, if not disputed, they send you another email saying they have made the payment.

This gives you protection against a bad supplier who tries to double bill you, or take subscription after you have cancelled.

I find the system very useful and used it for one about year. I also use it to buy things on line, as by using my UK CC/DC , I was charged VAT even through the item never went near the UK.

You don't need any paper work to wire your money to other Thai bank accounts.

Sounds like Kasikorn is the one. I already have a business account with Kasikorn, so I guess it wont be too much hassle opening a personal account with them.

Thanks everyone ! :)

For anyone interested in a credit card American Express issues cards to foreigners based on their Thai salaries without requiring a deposit. I would also like a Thai visa or mastercard credit card. Does anyone know if any banks issue these based on salary without a deposit?

Hi Arkady, Check out Citibank VISA--from their website looks like only salary requirements, no deposit:
