cloudhopper Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 Hi we have a dozen+ turkeys about 4-5 months old in a large enclosure along with lots of chickens and ducks. A week ago one of the turkey hens died after (so the hand who saw it says) being humped and pecked by several toms. We tried isolating the toms but one of them turned up dead this morning with severe pecking wounds. All the birds seem to get along and according to Mrs. CH are "happy". Until we kill and eat one anyway. Any advice or does this sort of thing just happen?
bina Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 crowded conditions and not enough food two main causes for pecking; too many males and not enough females ratio an other major cause. death by disease and then being pecked and cannibilized also happens so check if the pecking is before or after death. if its after death, time for post mortems on death of birds for disease control. bina israel
