What an odd question......Everyone who has been around the block a few times know that the darker the skin of a woman, the hotter the sex. At least that is what I tell the girls in the bars when they keep asking me the exact same question about why farangs seem to like dark skin.

I have a good friend who is a Thai woman. She has a bf from Norway who not surprisingly prefers her to have dark skin. When he isn't here she is doing everything to whiten her skin, then when he arrives he gets her in the sun quickly to darken her up. Then as soon as he leaves again, it's immediately back to skin whitening mode. He is important to her and I know she is a sincere partner, but this shows how she values having white skin outside of her relationship to the man. I believe she is striving to impress her female friends mostly.

where did i say my Thai friends asked me this ? i never said this.

these were regular thais like som tam seller, hairdresser, etc, when i started a conversation they are asking me annoying questions like "u have thai gf" "why farang like dark skin" etc.

i get tired of these same questions over and over.

i need a dumb/silly thai style response that will counter this question, the truth of the repsonse is not important, some silly response that will satisfy them is fine.

easy to see why thais want to be white.

it means more income. 2 girls who server drinks. the white one will get better tips from better QUALITY customers! scientifically proven.

The problem with this discussion is its too generalised. Not all farrangs here are old, fat or even ugly. Many have wives who have good jobs and/or have their own money. To just consider one extreme is blinkered and gives a blinkered response. Out of all my friends in mixed marriages (Thai/Western) most of them have very similar ages (i,e, the age difference between partners) and more than half the women have/had good jobs. They are a sliding scale skin-colour-wise from very pale to quite dark.

One of the darkest skin one is married to a 'much' older male (I think about 20 years gap), but she is in her late forties too and they have been married over 15 years.

A very good friend of mine is 39, his wife 35, she has dark skin - he does adhok jobs for cash in the UK. She owned a successful bar in Thailand (family owned and run - and no not a brothel, its a live music bar and still going strong). She left that to go to the UK with him, where now she has two jobs - and I dare say still earns more than him.

When I asked my wife, she simply says "Thai men can't be trusted and do not treat their wives well" (I drilled down on the last bit and she meant both that they have to do everything with no help and that the husbands beat them and get drunk). This is also a blinkered view of course, but according to my wife a view held by a lot of Thai women - ESPECIALLY the educated one.

Of course, this is from a small set of friends compared top the 40 million woman in Thailand or the however million of tourists and expats in LoS at any one time; and my wife's view is a mind meld of one, but it shows its not all to do with money and because they can't get someone else.

I could also say that she turned down two suitors before me - via her family who were approached - both where Thai Chinese (as she is) and one was from a fairly wealthy family. She could only say she didn't like Thai men in response to why (accept she also said the second one, the wealthy guy, was thick - she was at school with him). If I there was any discrimination it would have based on my astrological chart rather than skin colour - I had to have my hands read and well as various numerology and birthday/time analysis before it was deemed we were suitable for each other!

The most lively, educated and wealthy 100% Thai woman I talked to was the darkest; she'd chosen a Chinese 18 yrs her senior over half a dozen beau's - apparently he had to fight to win her hand!

To me it's pitiful that so many (including Thai) women have bought into what TV/movies/celebrities have modelled as "globalised" beauty. Ever since the 50s "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" big profits have been made from dye/bleach/skin whiteners etc. Along with cosmetic surgery, more look as if they're being turned out of mould castings.

More men are following the trend and spend more time in front of the mirror than the women, or so they tell me!

You seem to have made up your mind about this question you make!! You are, as we all are, hooked up in your own culture. Like britmavric said, it is a cultural thing and also opposits attracts each other.

I have heard from Thais up here in Isaan, that brown-taned thais "work rice" and that is not good enough for, like you say, 60 million Thais! It is far better to look like something that is not natural!! So instead of admire people that work and make their contribution to sociaty, you are looking down at them, and try to separate yourself from them... Strange 60 million people I like to say!

Westeners are whitish mostly in their skin, at least compared to thais, and the opposit are brownish... so to me that is the answer.

But if my friend go down to the beach and I stay home, I will certainly not look down on him becuase he got a tan.. Nor will he look down at me because I am more white than he is.

As you yourself said, it is unbelieve how people can think this and that... Yes! to me it is unbelieve how people can buy these shit-chemicals here in Thailand and destroy their skin, jus to get a white outside. It should be much much better if you could paint your inside.

I'm sure somebody has already said this, but it is my opinion that this is the typical Thai steriotyping/generalisation thing going on mainly out of pure ignorance and a lack of diplomacy.

A case in point, about 18 months ago my wife (pale skinned Thai) and I were having dinner at an upmarket restaurant as the guests of representatives and managers of a pharmacuticl company. The people from the company were all upper middle class and well educated . At one point in the table chatter, one of the women from the company asked me "why did you choose your wife as she has white skin because i thought "farangs" prefered dark skinnned women"?

I wanted to spit in her face for being inappropriate, but I've come to expect and sometimes accept this kind of behaviour from Thais.

I know she didn't mean to be rude. It's just plain ignorance. I simply ignored the stupid question and changed the topic as after all we were the guests.

This stupid question is asked of me from time to time. I usually ignore it because it takes too long to explain and I might say something that they would take offence at (like why are you so predjudiced?).

The answer is fairly simple. Most westeners only socialise in dark skinned women circles (bars, massage parlours, shops, restaurants etc) . Most upper class Thai woman (read white skinned) have difficulty socially with a westener b/f or husband in tow. Yes there are a few exceptions.

Following this thread for the past couple of days, I have noticed that the skin color seems to be of concern to several people, while others could care less. Hair, eye color, weight, distribution of same, hand, feet and mouth size are other areas which are other physical properties, noticed and considered in mate selection. Thank the stars that everyone has a different concept of beauty/handsome, otherwise a lot of us would be single and lonesome. The one thing I have noticed is that most are pink where it matters (to some degree) and I doubt that any 4 people would agree on the ideal physical characteristics which would satisfy the others.

plain and simple racism is quite rampant whether it be overt or covert. many dark skin thais are educated and still face discrimination. MLK said a man should be judged on the content of his character, not the color of his skin. i dont know if there is a thai equivalent of MLK.

If westerners prefer dark skinned girls it is probably because in the western geared entertainment industry, the vast majority of girls are darker, as it appears the applicant pool for westerners is largely from this arena.

personally i like to socialize with intelligent, personable, humble, educated people of any race/religion.

Surely one day when we can all just scan each other's DNA: avoiding folks with traits that we don't like with handheld scanners, everything will be one huge happy melting pot because we'll see that we are indeed all the same underneath.

Either that or PC will die because it will be scientifically proven that many generalizations were correct after all and that skin color and other physical identifiers (um, like tall people tend to make better basketball players, bulkier people make better football players, and many -but not all of course- dark skinned folks just happened to be more fit for physical labor than intellectual pursuits) weren't so far off the mark.
