Drought inflicts heavy economic toll on northeast

KHON KAEN: -- The drought has cost northeast Thailand, one of the country's poorest regions, an estimated 2.4 billion baht this year, according to Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Chidchai Wannasathit.

The deputy prime minister said he had ordered the governors of the 19 provinces in the region to make sure people had enough water for daily personal use, and that supplies to agriculture were a secondary priority.

Drought came earlier this year and lasted longer than usual and has already left a trail of damage. The five hardest hit provinces are Nakhon Ratchasima, Buriram, Ubon Ratchathani, Chaiyaphum and Khonkaen, according to statistics complied by the Interior Ministry’s Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department.

Overall, the drought is hitting 66 provinces nationwide, of which 19 are in the northeast. Deputy Prime Minister Chidchai told the governors that Cabinet had approved emergency funding of 852 million baht for water distribution and pump maintenance. This was to ensure supplies could be drawn from the deepest sources available.

Meanwhile, the Agriculture Ministry is working on developing dry-season farming techniques, while other agencies co-ordinate a long-term, sustainable plan for water resource management.

There will also be a public awareness campaign on how to use water wisely.

The Ministry of Agriculture is responsible for this, partually. There are so many corruptions in this ministry and everyone works their half-a$$. They have 6 months or more to save water, but they didn't. They know that drought hit Thailand every year, but do nothing to deal with the situation.

The King have had enough of this. He steps in as a Commander in Cheif of the rain making process 'cause it's his last stand to protect his people while no one else does. His rain seeding-making division also has corruptions going on that was why the rain makings failed at several attempts. Some camical substances are "fake". The King has to do it himself to make sure it works.

While the King working 24/7 at the age nearly 80 years old, Mr. Toxin and his family are shopping happily in Japan... Shame on him!

So true and it seems we have this drought emergency every year and every year we form committees to solve it and the next year we do the same thing again... It maybe to the TRT party's advantage to keep the masses that are their voting strength a little down trodden and in need of the money that TRT gives...

One other thing that will happen for sure...Even thought there is not enough water to take care of the crops and in some instances even drinking water for whole villages, I guarantee that every road in Issan will be wet from the day before Songkran starts till 2 days after Songkran...What a waste...

I agree! It's a total waste for the stupid SongKran fest. Every drop of water is valuable to those in need. Let's pray that Thai people wake up and start making a wise decision today.

As for TRT, they cannot fool people all the time. One day we will get back at them. It's just a matter of time. And when the time comes, it would be chaos.

LOS is at the moment in a similar situation as Imperial Russia before the October Revolution.

1. a high percentage of the arable land is in the hands of very few families.

2. what exists as an industrial base is also concentrated in very few hands.

3. one party domination

4. part(s) of the country are in turmoil (seperation movements)

5. corruption at all levels of society

missing pieces : - large scale war

- famine

The drought can replace the famine factor, it may be the precursor for one.

the crown stone missing: a reasonable scaled military conflict: any gusesses where?

When the weather heats up brains start to fry:

1. A lot of farming land is still in the hands of the peasants, much of Issan holds no interest, ie economic value, to the capitalists so the locals continue subsistence rice farming and cattle grazing.

2.The industrial economy is dominated by Sino-Thai, Japanese conglomerates but that doesn't mean the workers are in any mood for taking over the means of production, Thai unions are hopelessly divided, divisive and corrupt.

3.Thai Rak Thai is Thaksin, it's a one man show, the underlings are starting to smart at his domination, he has to keep throwing bones to the various factions to keep them happy. It's a juggling act, if he goes there's no ideology to hold them together, just vested interests, but they will stick together' for the sake of the country'.

4.Only the deep south is in turmoil, 3 provinces, the rest of Thailand feels like England in regard to N.Ireland, yes, the minority have suffered terribly from injustice but random killings will win no friends or support.

5. Corruption for the average Joe, taxi drivers and motorcyclists is just a fact of life to be endured, nothing special.
