Htc Dream Phone: Where Is The Gps Antenna Located?

Featured Replies

This may sound like a silly question, but I would like to know where the GPS antenna is located in the HTC Dream phone (T Mobile G1). When recording a hiking track I would like to put the phone in my pocket so that the end with the GPS antenna is sticking out, for a better reception. The manual shows me an antenna location but that antenna is obviously for phone and data communication, ie the connection with the cell tower, not for the GPS antenna.

The full manual is at the link below but it is large (13.7 MB) and you should only click on it if you really need to download it.

Not sure about the HTC Dream but with many smartphones, unless you physically attach an external GPS device to your phone, the device doesn't actually use GPS satellites to determine your position. It does a similar function by triangulating your position using cell towers. It's not as accurate but a real GPS system would be a lot to cram into most phones. The advantage is, a satellite receiver has to be able to see the satellites. Using cell tower triangulation you can shove that sucker way down into your pants and it won't care. It IS transmitting, too, though. So don't burn out your nads. One way to tell if you have real GPS or just a tower triangulation system is to sit down in front of the computer and take a reading. If it works indoors (where it presumably cannot see satellites) then it's not a real GPS.

Thank you for your reply, Igor. The HTC dream does have GPS.

I think I found the answer to my question, with a little experiment. Using the Android application “GPS Status 2” I put my phone in a place where it connected to GPS satellites and it showed connection to 6 satellites. I wrapped an aluminium foil around the bottom of the phone and the connection remained the same. Next, I wrapped the foil around the top and now it showed connection to only 3 satellites. Conclusion: also the GPS antenna is built into the top of the phone.

Sorry to have offered bad information, Giacomo. I found that interesting as I am waiting (impatiently) for the Hero to arrive.

Nokia N95 8gb also has an integrated GPS and the antenna is under the keypad.
