jaideeguy
Before this school year ends, we will have to make a choice for a new school for our 12 yr old boy [P-6} and will be entering high school and I would like to know the private school options here in CM. Wish I could afford an international school, but my economy has it's limits lately. It would be great to have a pinned topic for other parents to refer to when the time comes for them to choose. MODS....COULD YOU PLEASE PIN THIS?? [if it does offer complete info] Would appreciate any input......names of schools, tuition, religious [?], good administration?, English program, locations, complaints, praises , teacher/student ratio etc... I have seen a few mentions/complaints on the CM forum lately, but they are scattered and before anyone suggests it, I have done a search and haven't come up with much. I can offer info on a fair [only] private school that my boy is leaving because they didn't keep their promise of expanding to high school. It's Suan Dek, San Kapheng, Buddhist, tuition 7,500thb/term + the usual and optional extras , one native English speaking teacher that is spread quite thin, approx 30 students to 1 teacher, administration seems lacking is some regards, but the campus is beautiful......like a botanical garden. Bottom line, it's a decent lower grade school, but needs better administration. Maybe they will improve with time. Now, other parents can please add to this list.......... Varee, Mumfort, Sacred Heart, Prince Royal, Dara, and how many others in CM?/ must be at least 5 more. jaideeguy
Thanks BA....great list of international schools with websites, but as I mentioned in my OP, I don't think an international school is in my budget. Will check them anyway....thanks for starting this list. now, How about some regular Thai private schools, altho most probably don't have websites. Actually what i am seeking is consumer reports from parents that have children attending.
BlackArtemis
forgot some international schools: The Chiangmai Christian German School http://www.cdscm.org/html/english.html Nakorn Payap International School http://www.nis.ac.th/ These are private schools: Varee http://www.varee.ac.th/v3/index.php (Their "English" button doesn't seem to be working) The Prince Royal's College http://www.prc.ac.th/englishweb/ Dara Academy http://www.dara.ac.th/mains/ Sacred Heart College http://www.sch.ac.th/ Wicahi Wittaya http://www.wichai.ac.th/

srisatch
We checked out pretty well everywhere. I think in part depends where you live. Our kids went to Varee for a while. c 21000 a term x 2. Seemed the best. But pretty formal and tedious just like the rest of the schools. Pleasant staff though and plenty of native English speakng teachers. I think Prem is probably better but expensive..and anyway we wanted them to be with Thai kids. Given a choice they then chose to go back to school in the UK!! Edited September 26, 2009 by srisatch

Jaideeguy said he was too skint to send the student to an International school.Sheesh! That was not the original post. Notice both the title and OP has been edited. Furthermore, why not make one school thread rather than two. If you make two I am 100% sure you will have "This thread is great, but what about XXXX type of schools?" Blinky Bill
My 18 year old daughter is in her final year at Wachirawit, she's done quite well apart from the fact that her English sucks. jaideeguy
BB .....that's the kind of report that I was seeking....actual replies from parents and their opinions on the quality of school as well as costs. And PB, thanks for your assumption.....maybe I should have been a little more specific in my OP and requested consumer reports from parents with kids in private Thai and bi-lingual schools and not international schools. I am amazed that other parents haven't replied to my simple request, as I'm sure they are out there.

Would surprise me if its many as that , my son is at wachirawit pratayom ESP programme , and we pay a little less then 20k a term . My assumption was that when moving to Matayom the fees should be less , 80k seems a lot for me at Matayom at this school , but perhaps I'm wrong . By the way at pratayom at Wacharawit from this year everybody has to follow the ESP as well , it was at choice first , guess they realised a lot of their students English sucked too much . I don't thinnk the curriculum at this school is great , mediocre , but like the school not being overcrowded , seems quite and peaceful with no expensive tuition fees . chiangmaibruce
JDG: One reason for little response so far might be that there are in fact pre-existing threads that people have already contributed to, but which didn't turn up in your search. Perhaps you need to search under specific school names to find them (?) Our boy goes to Sarasas ... here is one thread for that school (they also have a web site) http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/Sarasas-Wita...ol-t191426.html We'd also love to opt for an international school ... but not just at the moment. Nevertheless I am impressed with Sarasas - in terms of how much you get for the relatively low level of fees (<15,000 term). This includes the teacher/student ratios), the care shown by the teachers, the standard of facilities and cleanliness, etc... and he seems happy there. For example in my son's bi-lingual kindergarten class there are four teachers (2 Thai, one philipino, one aussie) for less than 30 kids. We are not kidding ourselves though that his English skills will be adequate even in the bi-lingual stream, so this is going to require a change in the not-too-distant future. triffid
Our girl started at P1 this year at Wichai Wittaya. We are very pleased in all respects with the school - can speak only for this prmary level, but no reason to believe that later levels are not just as good. Fees are about 30,000 a term, but there are unavoidable extras. This first year will approach 80,000 I think.
scorecard
I searched old posts but couldn't find much comment from parents on Sacred Heart College (but must be honest I'm not a techie). Would very much apreciate if parents of current Sacred Heart students would please share their thoughts about this school. I'm so far aware that it's girls only school and goes right through to the end of high school Would you please share your comments on: - Is there a full English program (all subjects, except Thai language and Thai history or something very similar, taught in english), or...? - Do they have a number of western teachers? - What's the typical total number of students in each class? - Do they push christianity? - Do they encourage regular parent/teacher discussions? Any other comments you'd like to share of course very welcome and much appreciated. Thanks.
scorecard
FEEDBACK RE VAREE SCHOOL So far I've picked up some good things about this school, but my info. about class size worries me (recently from this thread and from another source I've heard that class size for Pathom 1 was over 40 students). So yesterday I telephoned the school, mainly to ask about class size. No problem to quickly speak to a Thai lady who spoke good English: - Mentioned that the English language version of their website was not working. - Response - "Never mind, It's not important" Worth sharing, but i'm not suggesting this would be a major factor for me in deciding yes or no for this school. - Asked about class size for Pathom 1. - Response - Policy is mazimum of 35, but right now 43 in the class. - I asked whether there was any possibility that class size (policy and reality) would reduce down to say 25. - Response - "What for, it's just not important". jaideeguy
It's a given that you will never get accurate info from the schools and that's why I posted [op]. It's going to be 'up to us' to share info from a parent's perspective, hopefully from parents with kids attending the schools and so far they are not replying much. Please inform us parents......
