Me and my friend recently purchaced a one way ticket to thailand as we plan on thailand being our first stop on our several month trip. We were planning on just working out where we were going after Thailand once we got there, but have heard since that we will not be allowed into the country without evidence we are going to leave before our visas expire, is this true and if so what would this evidence consist of.

Your airline may refuse to allow you to board without an airline ticket out of the country within 30 days of arrival. Given you are undecided on your exact travel plans after you arrive in Thailand, you should obtain a tourist visa from Thai embassy/consulate in your country. They are currently free.

I don't think you'll have the problem of not being allowed in the country.

It's the airlines you might have trouble with. You might not be allowed to fly without a visa or proof of leaving the country within 30 days. Proof would be an airline ticket.

If you have a visa, no problem. Tourist visas are free until early March 2010.

ah so your saying we would be ok if we got either a 30 or 60 visa before we left england? then we wouldn't have to show proof we're going to leave?

For UK national, single entry visa will give a 60 day permission to stay on arrival. And you will have no problem with the airline. Suggest you apply through Hull consulate; this can be done by post. You should get your passport back with visa within a few days.

Talking about Hull, I understand that while the visa itself is indeed free this particular consulate, an honorary consulate, charges a small handling fee for its issuance. You will find information about it on the website to which thaiphoon has given you a link.

You say "several months".

Single entry tourist visa gives you 2 months that can be extended with 30 days.

If you have not made any plans yet and maybe wants to go a trip to Laos or Cambodia you might consider another option.

Double entry tourist visa or 1-year Non immigrant O visa.
