Education Visas – Are They For Real

Hi all,

Thai education visas are advertised as if you qualify you get a non-immigrant ED visa if you fork over 27,900bt.

Has anybody has these before and what was it like.

What happens if you don’t turn up for class and what about their online course via Skype?

In other does anyone recommend this kind of visa with the conditions involved.

I recently saw a post by one school, a sponsor of this forum, saying that currently 1,500 students are enrolled, and this is only one of many Thai language schools in Thailand. So the answer is “yes, it does work”.

If you don’t turn up for class the Ministry of Education may refuse you the letter you need from them to get your next 90-day extension of stay. I remember a post by a member who reported that he was called by the Ministry of Education for an interview so they could verify that he had in fact in the meantime already learnt some Thai. I believe the school has to keep an attendance record and submit it to the Ministry of Education with the request for the requisite letter for an extension of stay. Perhaps one of the schools will post here to give specifics.

Yes, you do need to attend school/classes.

AFAIK neither immigration nor the education department are actively checking attendance, but there are plenty reports where the student is approached in Thai instead of English at immigration, just so they can get a feel you are actually learning the lingo!

Do note that it is not a 1 year visa per se, you need to get extensions very 90 days at a cost of 1900 Baht. You do not leave the country though, just go to your local immigration office.

Yes. Do it at the same time as getting you 90 day extension.
