Today I bought Cherry Tomatoes sell by date 6/10 use by 7/10

when I opened some of them where foaming a white substance . and several very soft not fresh and looking brownish .

Chemicals ?

Are they dangerous ?

I will take them back tomorrow and ask to speak to a manager . ( The last time I did this when a steak I bought was not edible , I was given a number in Bangkok to phone , switchboard ..... )

What are the laws in Thailand regarding use of chemicals on farms - and does anyone take any notice .

I've never been impressed with the Tesco produce.

I once got mega-food poisoning from a bar-b-q chicken at a Bangkok Tesco (the one near National Stadium), one of the few cases I've encountered in the country. I point out the irony of it when I tell foreigners who cringe when I tell them I eat at the food stalls.

I never read use by dates. If it looks ok I buy it, if it looks suspect I don't. The use by dates are only semi accurate if the product is stored at the recommended temperature.

Also what you're looking at is the packaging date.. for things like minced meat that means that it was sitting out as chunks of meat for a while, then in the morning of some day it's minced and packed and that's the day you see.

Still, the meat is better than at outdoor markets. :) But a lot of it still looks dodgy, and it's the same for all the hypermarkets, including Makro.

I don't know how far you are from ARI BTS station. There is Villa Market, have everything you know and use. Maybe there are more than one Villa Markets. After in Bed for 3 days from food poison, I am very careful of where to buy food. Besides, Villa Market is the only place I know that carries Macallan 12 and 18!!! All produce are fresh. There are a lot of products from California and Florida as well. Even have all kinds of Balsamic Vinegar.

Good Luck.

Macallan - Single Malt, right?

I think the OP lives on Koh Samui, so BTS might not be an option.

Don't you find that somehow single malt whisky just doesn't seem to taste right in Thailand? I've tried several of my favourites here, including MacAllan, Talisker and Laphroaig, some of which were bought here and some in various duty-free outlets - NOT King Power - and none taste like they do back in UK. I reckon that it must be something to do with the lack of freezing, horizontal rain, beating on the windows. Distinct lack of peat fires here as well!

Don't bother feeding our Thai bretheren on single malt, by the way, as they'll only want to put soda in it! I have explained to them that this practice will incur the wrath of the large, hairy, claymore wielding Scotsman who lives in the next soi but the advice seems to fall on deaf ears I'm afraid!

More likely to get food posioning from fruit and veg than meat.

Fresh is so vague its meaningless.

Hi 'churchill',

Did you buy them in Koh Samui btw?

Veggies with sell by date makes me :) ROTFL. They are either fresh to look at or foaming a white substance (mould) and looking brownish NOT fresh. :D . Next thing we will have all the apples, onions, potatoes etc.. with stickers on saying 'Buy and Eat Me Now Please' :D

So 'old and mouldy news' then :D is this the good news that you bring us 'churchill' :D

Yours truly,

Kan Win :D

P.S. Sorry, but could not resist the last part. Tis me Tongue and a little bit Cheeky as well :D

Trouble is they hide the bad ones - listen to my Welsh friend for a laugh !

Although we shop at Tesco in Pattaya we very rarely buy their fresh produce as it is of an inferior quality to markets and stores such as villa and tops.
