I know their not comparable to the likes of the Telegraph, the Guardian, the Independent etc.

But between the two mentioned newpapers, which one do you reckon is the best ?

My vote goes to Bangkok Post simply because its Thailand's first English newspaper :o

they both stink and are only good for the adverts...BBC, Guardian, Observer all available online...

Not the same reading online.

I like to lie in my hammock in my garden, under the banana trees having a smoke, eating mangoes, having a drink, watching the world go by, and the buffalo, while trying the 9 letter word game, and the cryptic crossword.

Computers remind me of work.

Both The Bangkok Post and The Nation are terrible newspapers so I'm not voting for either. For reliable news about Thailand I usually go to the bbc website or read The Guardian.

I personally wouldn't mind paying 50 Baht for either paper if they improved the quality of their journalism/editing/reporting.

The crossword and puzzles in the Post do it for me......Dont like the Nation and a lot of its stories verge on sensationalism..

We are talking about English Newspapers printed in Thailand about news in Thailand, judging by the poll.....what does that have to do with Pommie papers even tho a comparison was made by ther OP....

If everything is better in the UK.....stay there.... :o

when i buy one , it will be the post and it's for the crossword , the wordgames and "monty" .

the news reporting in both is poor , the motoring section and database in the post are pretty good.

for news and analysis i use the internet or find a pub with some decent uk papers.

A couple of years ago I would never read The Nation. Now I read both The Nation and the Bangkok Post.

I agree that the Bangkok Post has gone down a lot and many things that I read in The Nation are not reported in The Bangkok Post. I am seriously thinking of changing my subscription from the Post to The Nation but I'll miss Database.

The Bangkok Post is not bad for 20 baht. The news is poor, but the business section is good and the travel and database are good pull-out sections. The letters pages are entertaining and on a Friday the football coverage is good for the weekend. The sport pages are good and Sportsbag is funny.

The leader column in the Bangkok Post is decent, as are the columnists, the classifieds are informative and the colour glossy front three days a week makes a good wrapping for disposal of Issan foodstuffs.

All for 20 baht, (28 pence in U.K.). I think the Telegraph is 60 pence now!

Wilson Steer.

Try take piss :D

Not at all....I just get a bit ticked off with the Poms that want their UK food, UK papers, UK beer etc.....What are they going to Thailand for, they may as well stay in the UK. I know that this may seem stereotypical but you do see it a lot in the Brits....the "Tuesday is Bangers and mash, where is my bangers and mash" type.

Some of them just wont break out of their cosy little habits even after living in another country for years.

But I have met some good ones that do have a bit of adventure about them.

Wasn't the first 'The Bangkok World'? That's just what I read; I'm not old enough to know for real.

I know that the Nation is a more reliable news source, but I prefer the Post simply because I am familiar with it; been reading it for 14 years. If the Post is sold out,

I'll buy the Nation.

The post has been around a long time, I believe.

Mee too, I buy the Nation if the Post is finished.

I also ask the sellers every day, "why don't you buy less nations and more posts?".

Especially upcountry, the local shops are always saying " Post moat laew, mee nation". I too am familiar with the post, living in Bkk for years. I only buy two English papers a week now.

I buy the Thai footy ones, they are better than the Post and Nation.

Well, as a former news guy, I have to wade into this one. :D

The question is: either/or.

The answer is: on any given day and any given issue one paper will excel over the other. Competition is healthy for news and better serves the community at large. Read as many sources of news you can, read between the lines, and you - the reader - will be better informed for it. There can never be only one.

I will note that The Nation wins points as both an independent publication (I favour independent news) and one which takes valuable press freedom issues to court. The Bangkok Post does have to do the political dance with the current prime minister's ownership in the parent company but employees there have demonstrated some ability to challenge infringements on their work environment. (I've only just arrived and not looked into this fully. I may be in error here. Please correct me if I'm wrong.) :D

I'll also note The Post contains more readable and diverse sections per week and really does have the better comics and crossword. The Nation tends to single run issues (colour pieces) and then not follow up. (I'm still waiting to find out if kimchi cures birds of bird flu.) :o

Ultimately, when looking for any particular subject I pick up The Post. When I've got time for a general read I pick up The Nation.

ps: I also favour The Independent over The Guardian. Better music section and design than the stodgy sea of grey. :D

I'm surprised by the results so far..  The Nation may not be perfect, but integrity has to count for something??  Bangkok Post is completely unreliable, and getting more so by the day.

I totally agree with you. The Post is absolutely pathetic when it comes to getting the real flavor of a local news story. Their reporting is so toned down and it is so obvious that they are very afraid of creating any kind of controversies.

I don't see how the Post's reporters can look in the mirror everyday and call themselves journalists.

The Nation can be a bit unfairly anti-west at times but at least they can still hold their heads high.

For me, the best papers locally available are the International Herald Tribune and the Asian Wall Street Journal.

There's always the web for that.. (bangkokpost.co.th) Not to mention that it hardly contains anything Thailand-specific that you couldn't get from more reputable IT / computer sources.

One more thing comes to my mind.

In Bangkok and obviously some other locations, you can obtain a copy of some of your favorite newspapers by computer print-out.

One of the pubs I know, have got the Zurich Tagesanzeiger, every day.

You can order other newspapers and pass by to pick it up.

I don't want to make advertising, but have a look in here:

http://newspaperdirect.com/

These guys have distributors all over Thailand and you can get, French, Dutch, English, German, Danish etc.

It works basically that they appoint 'printing stations' equipped with the proper computer-connection.

May be a help for the one or other. As said, no advertising from my side and I have no cnnection with these guys.
