A few days ago I heard whimpering sounds coming from the back of my house, I went out side and found some one had tied up Two young puppies to a bush with some old string. ( both Bitches and appear to be the same age, and my wife thinks their sisters ) May be the people who tied them up were thinking this rich Farang will take care of them, Here's a shot of them both .....

by coincidence we have been thinking of getting a dog to guard the house, we do already have Two small house dogs , but wanted a larger dog who would live in a kennel out side the house in the walled grounds , So as we don't have the heart to just turn the new puppies out , we have decided to keep them both. So the next thing I want to do is to find out what's the best way to do some basic training for them both to become house guard dogs. Just a few questions ( no order )

1. Is it best to train them together of separately

2. Is it best only One person carry out the training

3. As they will live their life being hopefully out side house guard dogs, would it be best to keep them away from any humans other that the immediate family

4. We intend never to let them come into the house , is this wise

5. Is it best that the same person all ways feeds them

6. Is it best the same person is responsible for disciplining them when necessary

7. Would it be advisable or necessary to have them both spayed

Other thoughts are that we would like to train them not to eat any food that's found lying on the ground , and to drink water from only their water bowl

the thought being that if some one wanted to throw poisoned food over the wall , they would not touch it.

The above questions may sound a bit harsh, but we can offer them both a good home , love and attention and hopefully they will turn into good house guard dogs

as for the training we are still thinking of the best way to go about it , so any thoughts , advice or comments are most welcome.

Thanks

a quick glance at their feet and faces, and i think they will be small to medium sized dogs;

1/ bitches are good guard dogs and i think better then dogs as they are more 'nest protection' oriented ;

2/guard dogs have to /must be socialized well;

3/ basic obedience training of any sort must be undertaken first and foremost before, and/or while working on other basics like feeding/drinking set ups (choose the method that fits u and the dogs best, but get professional help since i can see that u want to do the right thing but u dont seem to have basic knowlege of dog behavior) ;

4/ most dogs dont really act as effective guards until they reach sexual/physical/psychological maturity... some even until they hit a year and a half years old;

5/two dogs are better then one as yard dogs as they have more of a 'pack' instinct then, and they back each other up ;

6/get them spayed as the heat (estrus) they will go in to at about 6-8 months of age will detract from their 'job' for about three weeks, plus u wont then have to deal with unwanted pups or lots of male dogs in back yard;

7/make sure they are fed properly (the way they look, probably two/three times a day still -- as in they look young);

8/ our yard dogs we had at our petting zoo never saw inside of a house, and as a matter of fact, libby the cannaan bitch was in a house for three days after surgery and she was very very unhappy being within walls. several people here on the forum have 'house' dogs and 'outside' dogs-- also think about socializing them with your house dogs so u dont end up with mauled shiztus (or whatever it is u have in the house).

maybe u should get in touch with macb (he's in the pinned topics above, in the training section, he's still around i think, and he did all sorts of training. not sure if nienke does guard work?...) but definately if u are talking about formal training u must have a good trainer that works with u also at home and with your family.

even a chihuahua can be a good guard dog.. dont mix up between trained attack dogs or perimeter dogs and yard dogs/guard dogs that bark, and show 'presence' when strangers show up. the job of a good guard dog is to deter unwanted people from entering, but not to have strangers get bitten. the dogs bark, and even band together and look 'aggressive', but they are still only guarding, not attacking.

if u are in need of guard/attack dogs for some reason, then best to invest in a breed suitable to the purpose that has been bred and developed for that purpose, and then trained along with u and your family ...

the last thing u need is a small mixed mongrel attacking your mother in law (well, maybe u do want that)if u are wanting a non socialized dog living int he back yard, that is recipe for disaster (accidental bites, nasty dog)

Looks like whoever left them was right about "this rich Farang will take care of them" huh? :)

That black one is as cute as a button, too. Did you put the collars on them, or did they come "ready fitted"?

They are adorable little puppies! Whatever worthless P.O.S. dumped those little rascals at your house must have obviously seen that you had a bigger heart than themselves and would actual consider giving them a real home. Kudos to you. I certainly hope you can care for them.

Well Mee & Poo are turning out to be great dog's and have quickly become part of the family and we love them to bits, and now I think its time to think about getting them both spayed , to stop any un wanted puppies.

Having never arranged this spaying before , can some one please out line what to expect and

what we will have to do , also any ideas of the approximate costs involved .

Thanks

Thanks for the advice Bina.

I got 3 male puppies (farm style breeds) last Wednesday night unfortunately before I had made a small compound for them.

I feed them 2 or 3 times a day with scrambled egg, boiled rice and some small chopped pork or chicken and make sure there is always water and milk available for them.

Their compound for the present is around 20 sq/m as we have 10 rai and broken fencing everywhere plus we are on a fast road up to the national park.

They will join sam ka our 3 legged dog and hopefully become sort of guard dogs.

All the dogs we have had in Thailand have been outside dogs and one of these 3 will go up to my wife's shop later and become the resident dog there.

She used to have a bitch which had 6 puppies and I was going to get 3 of them but while we were in BKK for a few days somebody stole the bitch and the puppies and also the papaya she had out the back as well.

billd-- no need to give milk!!. will just cause the runs... if they are over 6 wks ols, then what u are giving should be ok, plus puppy chow or raw food diet. just dont need the milk. get them wormed also........and good luck.

as for the spay question: there's been a couple threads recently: but u should spay the bitch before her 6 onths, before she ocmes in to heat, or wait until she comes in to heat but keep good care she doesnt get banged up, then get her spayed (differeing opiniouns as to which is better for the bitch. no need to let her have a litter. the grosser way is to let her get banged up but spay her anyhow (a full hysterectomy) but not sure how thai vets spay. all in all, its a same day operation, a few stitches or staples, sometimes some antibiotic pills, and thats that. for males, gelding is no big deal, just, again, differening opiniouns as to if good to do or not as may cause some dogs to become fatter.

maybe if u would say where u lived , again, someone could refer u?

It's very hard to find a vet that will spay a pregnant bitch.

Doesn't really go well with the Buddhist beliefs.

So don't let her get banged up.
