I updated 2 with no problems.

Thanks for that Astral.

I've got the updates already but they are pending installation (XP Pro SP3) on two PCs.

Was going to run them later this evening.

Already any idea which of the many update items caused the problem?

have no problems with the updates

No problem

I just did and my PC will not reboot, it blows out to a bluescreen and reboots again.

What's the KB number of the update(s)?

I only install those updates rated as 'critical'. Just finished downloading, I'm off to install now.

What "latest fixes" you're speaking about? Are those WinXP updates? If so, I had no problems with them (although I had installed them prior to reading your warning).

:) I have JUST installed and my computer is nagging me to reboot... :D

MS threw 17 updates my way; all went well though Comodo Firewall stopped an mrtstub.exe activity.

(Win XP Pro SP3)

There is quite a lot of info about "mrtstub.exe " when you google it.

It appears to be a bad guy but what is it doing in a M$ update?

THere 14 updates and I installed all, except the one for MS Office.

No idea which one caused the problem.

I do not have any restore points :)

Looking for my Acronis boot disk to restore an image file..............

I'm just going to wait for Win7.

It has been a scary afternoon.

Fortunately I treated my self to a 500Gb 2.5" disk and have it with me

so I was able to load my teaching files on another notebook and carry on work.

I did not have restore points enabled, they are now, but I did have a recent Acronis Image.

No boot disk but I was able to download the latest Trial version from the Internet and use that

to write a boot disk. I think I owe Acronis the $49.99 for the new Sw, they have earned it.

Once up I found that 4 paritiions on my disc had disappeared. I was going to recreate them, but noticed that

Paragon Partition Manager had a Recover Partitions function. It recovered 3 out of the 4.

The last I created and restored from my backup.

So all I have lost is little email and a few personal files, nothing very critical.

Still no idea what went wrong, except for the Windoze updates.

I can't help but wonder if those who no problems had "legal" copies of XP and those who had problems didn't ?

I added all the updates to my XP computer and all the updates to another Vista 32 computer..... No problems

Updated m PC and laptop; no problems :)

As for the computer nagging for a reboot: that is perfectly normal; computer needs to be rebooted for updates to take effect.

Ten years ago, did an MS update for my Windows operating system on a nearly-new HP desktop PC. The entire system crashed and wouldn't even reboot. Two weeks of calling MS and HP, and all I got was finger-pointing, the software guys blaming the hardware guys, and vice versa. Neither would take responsibility. HP claimed I had violated my warranty by messing with the pre-installed MS OP. (<deleted>??).

Finally had to take it to a shop to have the entire system wiped off and reinstalled (of course, losing a ton of data which I had not backed up yet--I know, my bad), and costing around $100 US.

1999: That was the last MS software update I ever installed. No problems since.

Security patches are necessary to keep the computer from being hacked. Computer Security is a layered defense where the O/S is an important part. Skipping MS updates leaves the computer vulnerable.

While you may find the computer works well, so may many others without your knowledge.

Wish I had seen that warning earlier. Just spent the last 4 hours repairing the laptop. Had the exact same problem, the pc would startup and in less than a minute bluescreen, and it would reboot again. Safe mode would not work either. Was able to use Hiren's Boot Disk and at least get into the system. Solved the problem with registry repair, registry defrag, and registry cleaning, then a system restore. After that cleaned the registry again. Seems to work now and have not had a problem for the past hour.

Never ever change a running system, why "update" if everything is fine? .... the story with "someone else...": well welcome!

I think my laptop is just not interesting or attractive enough and I am absolutely not "kii niioaw" I love to share and certainly not paranoid...

No problems here.

I can't help but wonder if those who no problems had "legal" copies of XP and those who had problems didn't ?

You may have hit the nail on the head here as I too had no problems. Too many folks using dodgy software and then screaming Ya boo .

Irrelevant.

I know a whole lot of folks running pirated Windows and have no problems keeping up-to-date with latest patches via Automatic Updates or manual download.

Good work-around,

And a timely reminder for frequent back-up, :)

Patches on my notebook installed last night without issue.
