In a couple of weeks I need to do a visa run to laos. I arrived from Australia on a 30 day visa and want to stay another 2 months. Last year I went to Laos to renew my visa with no problems.

Are there any issues in doing the same in a couple of weeks. I.e getting a 90 day visa and having it changed at the border to 60 days as they did last time?

Single entry tourist visa will give you 60 day permission to stay, which can be extended at local Thai immigration office for 30 days. Fee 1900 baht. The embassy in Vientiane is currently issuing double entry tourist visas free of charge, so you may want to consider that if possibly staying longer. With extensions and a border run in the middle, that would give you nearly 6 months stay. Some people are receiving red warning stamp at Vientianne for several back to back visas, but that should not be a problem for you. You mention obtaining 90 day visa, but you would need a valid reason to apply within the region such as Thai wife, Thai child, employment etc. A visa cannot be changed at the border, so not sure what you are saying.

I believe he means his 30 day entry plus 60 day visa equals 90 days?

The change this year is if you do not obtain a Consulate issued visa just crossing the border and return only gets a 15 day visa exempt entry.

Yes I meant I am on a 30 day visa at the moment and will apply for a 90 day visa. Last time this was reduced to 60 days at the border due to already staying 30 days on the visitor visa.

Thanks for clarifying about the consulate visa versus the 15 day extension visa. I will be applying for the 90 day visa at the consulate in Valentine.

Thanks very much!!!!

Your Tourist Visa is valid for use within 90 days of issue, not for an entry of 90 days. Upon entry, you are only allowed a "Period of Stay" of 60 days, nothing is being reduced at the border. But, in addition to the 60 days, you are allowed to apply for a 30 day exension.
