My son installed PointBlank on his Vista PC and it keeps hanging once the PointBlank.exe calls for the GamesGuard.des file (a file required for many online games to protect them from being hacked). All required files are where they should be.

He installed it on my XP PC and everything works without problems!

Some of his friends on Vista have the same problem while others on Vista do NOT have any problem.

For testing purposes he disabled all security programs (Firewall, AV, etc.) but still no luck. Also tried to run it in XP mode without success. Program is supposed to work with Vista according to their website.

On my XP PC the game works fine with full protection switched on.

Any idea where to look for the problem on my son's PC?

According to the instructions given here (in Thai), it specifically says not to change the default installation folder name, "PointBlankTH". << Applies to Windows Vista only.

You might wanna try re-installing the game, using the default installation settings.

EDIT: Found this from a Thai website...

Replace 'dbghelp.dll' and 'GameGuard.des' in the game folder with ones available here.

Thanks for your suggestions supernova.

Today is to late but tomorrow my son will certainly work on solving his problem based on your info.

Will see what happens and I will post an update.

My son tried everything as suggested but nothing works.

In Vista it does not even allow a change of install folder, so problem there.

Here is some info:

On my PC (XP) it loads and after some time the "GameGuard" window pops up , does its work and proceeds to the game.

On his PC it loads the same but when the "GameGuard" window should come nothing happens -- game hangs.

We compared the two installations and found all is identical apart from the fact that his does not have the "GameGuard" Folder whereas I have it.

Copied the "GameGuard" Folder manually from my PC into his installation folder but still no-go.

It is not a big issue since he can play on my PC but he would like to play on his because he has a big wide-screen monitor and I have "only" a regular 17" one.

Thanks again for all your suggestions.

Sorry it didn't work out. I did some reading, but couldn't find any official solutions except workarounds posted by gamers. You could try installing an older version of GameGuard. I doubt it will fix anything, but worth a shot.

im aware it may be a little bit late but there is a solution out there to your problem. i've just got over here myself and been trying to play that game.

http://www.pantip.com/tech/games/topic/GO2.../GO2875149.html seems to Fix the issue. im aware its in thai but its still very easy to get an idea of what your meant to do thanks to the screenshots ect.

just add gameguard to the Data Execution protection thingy + you may need to turn off User access control so gameguard doesnt get nuked.
