Staying In Koh Phangan Without A Fridge

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I am staying in Koh Phangan over xmas/new years and just found out our hotel does not have a fridge. Do you think I could buy or rent a small one for the 3 weeks I am there?

Alternatively, I was thinking of bringing this over with me:

and using it in the hotel room. Do you think I would have issues with customs at Bangkok airport?

Any other suggestions?

How much stuff do you want kept cold? Why not just buy a cheap cold box when you get there, buy ice daily and leave it behind?

well it was just for things like milk and some meats.. if i get an ice box and get ice daily, i might as well just buy the food every day hehe.. its not to save cost, its more of a convenience thing.. Plus the ice would melt over night

I take it that travel cooler/warmer runs off mains power (the only power supply mentioned is 12V DC off your car for the other gadget). It's a job to make out how big it is but I doublt if you'd have troubles at BKK customs as it's only one off for personal use.

The cool box I had in the States was a 48 quart double skin box and once cold the ice would last days even in the hottest weather.

I realize its 12V, I am an electrical engineer, rigging up a transformer for it will be no problem. Its about the size of 3 standard shoe boxes, stacked ontop of each other. Take no notice of the other gadget, I'm just interested in the cooler. I have nothing in my suitcase, it'll fit snugly in there and its only about 4kg.

"Any other suggestions?"

Leave your ice box, the transformer and the cables at home. Buy the milk from the near by 7/11 which is open 24hrs. Eat cheap Thai food, which you can get even at Had Rin (in the back).

If you really want a fridge for your meat or whatever (what meat?), go direct to the kitchen of your hotel and tell them with a smile to put it into the fridge there.

The only problem you might have is it showing up suspiciously on a scan at you airport of departure. A frien of mine had bought one of those rechargeable electric drills and was paged at the airport as it showed up on the X ray looking like a pistol.

Persoanlly I'd go with Birdman's advice and if you want a small supply of cold drinks in your room fill the wash basin with ice and clean your teeth in the shower.

Well it wont show up as a pistol on their x-ray machine, unless the x-ray machine is on some heavy drugs. I think I'll bring it and try my luck! =D

3 week holiday? Fridge? If you are not saving money then just book a hotel witha fridge. If you are saving money, milk and cold meats are more like luxury items here. Thai food is the cheapest way to go.... really don't stress it.

I suppose the OP means a hotel room without a fridge.

Simple...demand a fridge and they will take care of it in most cases; maybe at extra charge, but still far more simple than most ideas. If they won't, change hotel/room.

This whole post seems "much ado about nothing" :)

It probably is a low cost hotel. Anyway hotels have no fridge for rent. It would be an rare exception and would cost at least 50 rather 100. And for that he could eat and drink outside.

just thinking back through my stays in thailand, i have never had a room without a fridge, even a really cheap room ! ......

Gotta say it - I doubt whether you have ever been in a really cheap room. No offense!

When I was traveling 'on the cheap' I never had a fridge anywhere. I have never seen a fridge in a room under 200bt...

And to the OP - when I stay on Koh Tao, I get the water/ice company to deliver ice every morning to my bungalow. 15bt/day for 3-4kilos of ice. Styro ice box - 100bt at any shop. Also I buy 20liters of water every week for 20bt

On the cheap!!! Good luck.
