Whenever I add one of my Thai SAVINGS bank accounts, it comes out in my Paypal profile as a CHECKING ACCOUNT. (I don't have a checking account in Thailand).

I've had no problem with Paypal PAYMENTS (money gets deducted from my bank's web-card).

However, what if someone pays me through Paypal and I try to transfer money to my Thai bank savings account (registered on Paypal as "checking")... will the money still arrive safely credited in my SAVINGS account???

I don't know how to test it... since I can't send money to myself and none of my friends or family has a Paypal account.

Anyone with similar experience?

There's no problem but I'll double check what my own accounts say next time I log in. You can go ahead and add the account and withdraw the money no problem. Make sure the account number is right as the name is immaterial really. Failure to put in the right number might mean you'd lose the money for good.

What are you selling on Ebay by the way?- nothing too legal I hope :)

I know that "it works", meaning I'm able to successfully add an account number and successfully pay other people.

But how about when it comes to withdrawing money from Paypal to my Thai account?? (Thai account number is correct, but it is wrongly identified as a "checking" account by Paypal)

Will it still "work" then? :D

@Mommysboy: Not selling anything yet; hence my concern that it might not "work" if and when I do sell anything online, and the money might be gone for good. Please check if 1) your account type is correct/incorrect, and 2) if you have been able to successfully withdraw from your Paypal account to your "wrongly labeled" bank account in the past.. Would appreciate it! :)

They only look at the account number, the account type is not relevant.

Have you personally been able to withdraw from Paypal to a wrongly stated account type in Thailand with correct account number?

I have withdrawn money to a Thai bank account and there is nothing to worry about. You must make sure the number is correct that's all. After you've withdrawn you will have to wait 5 -11 days. If for some unlikely reason it did go wrong, the money is simply returned to your Paypal account (this once happened to me - guess what? I added the wrong number).

I can second this

It does not matter if it says "checking" and you withdraw

to a savings account. You can still withdraw funds

And I'll second again. The money was successfully transmitted to my Bangkok Bank savings account.

I think it took longer than I expected using Paypal and so now I use XE.com (XETrade) and I know ahead of time what exchange rate will be for my US$. Maybe PalPal is better for small money transactions.

I did have to do a one-on-one telephone call to XE Trade for security to set up my account. I don't remember PayPal doing that.

No problem at all.

Attached two screenshots where you can see my Bkk bank account shows as a checking account (while it is a savings account) and in the second one you'll see a successful transfer.

Thanks for your replies mommysboy, and to monty as well who always gives very clear answers (I was one of your followers for the LPG-car thread! But I opted in the end for plain petrol), and to the rest of you too.

I used Pay pal to purchase an Internet Baseball package from the U.S., and was charged the 1% conversion rate that Visa and M/C usually charges. My Visa Account is connected to Pay pal.

My PayPal account was setup with a USA address and checking account. Can I also add a Thai bank account to it? Or would I need to have set the account up with a Thai address and bank account to begin with?

Edit: Appears that I cannot add a foreign bank account. The add bank account screen just asks for account and routing numbers, nothing for a Swift code. And on the add funds page it says 'add funds from a US bank account 3-5 days' and nothing about a foreign account.

Please advise how you guys were able to setup your accounts with Thai banks. Can I open a second Thai based account? Or change the address and country on my current account?

Thanks

'Checking account' is an American term for bank account. I use my savings account with paypal and can withdraw money without any problems.

Likewise, it confused me at first, but withdrawals go to savings account without any problems :)

I added my Bangkok Bank savings account a few months ago and Paypal reflects it as a Savings account vs Checking....and I checked Paypal just a few minute ago to make sure.

They take their fee from the exchange rate...! :D

I checked and Monty got Baht 45.4134 to the € on May 16th, 2009 (which was a Saturday) whilst the rate on Friday May 15th was Baht 46,718 and on Monday 18th Baht 46,635.

They buy/sell however on the same day: May 16th (so they say :) )

PayPal won't lose since they make more than 1 Baht to the Euro and on 250 euro that's more than 300 Baht. (difference between 46,635 and 45,4134 = Baht 1,22/Euro x 250 Euro!

They do this daily on thousands and thousands of transactions.
