To Whitethai,

You say that you've no money or job and want to come and stay in Pattaya to get married?

I don't know how you worked that one out, but all i can say to you is: No Money No Honey my friend.

Stay in the UK, find a job and save, then come to pattaya for a holiday. Without money your a nobody in Pattaya, and that includes the girls!

It is not like high season here, in fact it is more like summer low season. I know this because I have been living here for two years.

There are many white couples, blokes from India, and the usual crowd of Xmas mongers, but the bars are not full, and the massage shops are not doing well either. I agree that it will taper off after Xmas.

I don't agree; not at all like summer low season! I know this because... oh, never mind how long I've lived here, here's what I think. As an example: right now in Jomtien, you can not find a motorbike to rent, other than at a ridiculously inflated "special price"! Yeah, it's special, alright. To me, this shows we are now at peak in the busy season, such as it is this year*. After all, it's the week before Christmas in a fantastic vacation destination like Pattaya! If it isn't busy now, it'll never be! Global recession or not, right now people are coming here, but...

*I definitely agree with:

"...There are many white couples, blokes from India, and the usual crowd of Xmas mongers, but the bars are not full, and the massage shops are not doing well either. I agree that it will taper off (within a month, imo!) after Xmas."

And, I wonder what the feeling in the bars will be (you know; the girls, the owners... the atmosphere!) as we who reside here are left, still going to these same bars next month... after the rush is over? It is my hope that as many bar people as possible have a good busy season and come out of this year's rush period happy! Then, hopefully, this will result in a positive prevailing attitude begetting a good & happy atmosphere every night! Good luck to everyone! Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!!

:)

I did my usual bar crawl on soi walking last night (still a bit foggy :) ) and i made it a point to ask all the workers/owners how

business was.

Only answers i got were - Bad, no good, mai sabai, farang kee nee ow! and 2 "go to hel*" scowls!

One English owner commented "alot of foot traffic but no ones spending much money"

I noticed too the Thai's in general werent very sanook/friendly as usual.

Check your change everytime u pay your bill, i got shortchanged 3x.

I've noticed that there is a thriving nightlife on Soi Buckhaw/LK recently. So this obviously has reduced the numbers of Beach Road Soi punters.

I think that many knowledgable return visitors to Pattaya tend to avoid Walking Street and the Soi 7/8 scene and search for value and smiles elsewhere.

Syd ya soi 7/8 is terrible, wicked attitudes there

I been soi buckhao a bit but dont see many stunners

Agreed, soi 7/8 are very disappointing by night now.

Well Soi Buckhaw is a long soi, but if you get your beer-goggles on and concentrate on the Pattaya Klang end you won't go wrong after 8.00pm.

The first thing i learnt after living here for a while was that Walking St is just a tourist trap and a rip off compared to other areas in Pattaya, and also not too friendly.

Syd, i have to agree that soi Baukow & LK are great alternatives and offer good value thats why many expats stay & socialise there.

Walking Street can be a rip off, but experiences helps a lot!

3 weeks after Christmas is probably right on the money. :)

The Russians will continue coming for a while longer, as they do every year, but not the Euro/Aussie/American tourist mongers.

Tonight every baht bus on Thappraya Road going into Pattaya was packed to the point of sagging under the weight of lardy Russians. The traffic jam on the dirt track (aka Thappraya Road) was a surprise for a Monday night, and Jomtien bars seemed very busy. But I agree, the definition and expectation of what constitutes "high season" gets shorter each year.

Malls make money out of Russians, Walking Street 7:11s do, and to be fair other important sectors of the economy do very well out of them, but they cannot underpin the wider Pattaya economy nor the P4P industry, and I think next year we may see a big contraction in businesses here, who simply give up the ghost.

Ok thanks Sotsira, you guys got me breaking out the maps and planning a hunt! :)

I guess start at oasis / soi diana and head north to pattaya klang?

After Oasis head in to Soi LK Metro and take a look around, there's lolitas, Champagne agogo(one of my favourites) The Blue Bar,(on the corner) and if your up to it, try the Devils Den!

Enjoy!

I think that many knowledgeable return visitors to Pattaya spend most of their time in the Walking Street, Soi 7/8 areas. They're good fun areas and shouldn't be missed, just keep your wits about you.

So its nothing like 2007 then?

It's every bit like 2007. People were complaining about how quiet it was back then too, and 2008 and 2006.

Here's an example. I went to watch the new Avatar movie just out at Central in the digital theatre (3D). The 15:55 session was fully booked out at 220 - 250 baht per seat as was the 19:20 session which I attended. The shopping centre was packed with many restaurants doing good business.

All the bar Sois were really busy. Walking Street was packed. Tourists were everywhere.

Agreed. business seems to be booming here but with one notable exception, as has already been mentioned. The P4P business is really quiet. The whole balance of the economy in Pattaya seems to be changing, from the traditional P4P business to the family-oriented holiday. Plenty of Russian and Indian families who seem to be spending freely in the malls, restaurants etc.

The P4P business is really quiet.

The only concession they make during tougher times is to become more aggressive and grumpy. They've had their day in the sun, now they have to move over for Russian tourists.

I have to admit traffic is terrible these days.Must be all those tourists from Europe who come on holiday by car. :)

The traffic is pretty bad all year long. Central was packed this weekend and the majority of customers were Thai. People seem to forget when discussing how busy this town is that Thais live and visit here too.
