The project was started by the Mirror Foundation, a well-respected Thai non-profit foundation. They have conducted research, dealt with cases of child trafficking for begging, published books and articles, and surveyed the attitudes of people in Bangkok about begging. In short, all begging is a scam, run by gangs and abetted by police. Children, the elderly, and disabled people are recruited and trucked to Bangkok for begging, given room and board, and hand over all their earnings to the gang.
