Hallo

We want to go by train or bus from Bangkok to Chumpon.

Some people on a dutch forum told us we have to buy tickets at least 24 hours ahead.

The problem is we arriving in Bangkok in the afternoon and we want to leave for Chumpon next morning (friday) on the 07u45 morning train or the 9u00 a clock morning bus.

Does this mean we can not get a train or bus ticket in time because we do not have 24 hours?

Or is the above info about 24 hours in advance wrong ?

We prefer train because we are staying 1 metro stop from the main train station in the mandarin hotel on Rama IV .

In case we prefer the bus , how do we go to the bus station from the mandarin hotel ?

Thanks

I would try to make travel arrangements in the afternoon after you arrive. The 24 hours is just that you have more of a chance to obtain seats with an earlier than departure booking. You can buy any time. If not a holiday weekend you may be able to obtain seats. For bus you have to cross the river to the Southern Bus Terminal so a Taxi is the logical transport.

I've made bus and train journeys to/through the South of Thailand starting from Bangkok. Train journeys can be more comfortable than the bus provided you get a sleeper. To be certain of getting a sleeper you'll need to book at least one day in advance. If you want to risk it you could turn up on the day - I have no idea of availability.

Most long bus journeys don't need to be booked in advance, because there are so many buses available. Having said that, you may need to book if you want to use a particular bus service on the recommendation of a friend. Buses tend to be quicker than the train, but on the downside they are often (always?) driven by morons. I have personal experience of being driven back from Chumporn by an absolute maniac whose attrocious driving resulted in one of the rear tires disintegrating, at which point everyone thought they were about to die. :o

If you want to take a bus, you'll need to go to the Southern Bus Terminal. Many city buses go there but you may as well take a taxi. Shouldn't cost you more than 150 baht. Don't take a tuktuk - they are unsafe, hot, and the driver will rip you off.

Have a nice holiday,

BB
