Bangkok Bomb Threat Dismissed

Bangkok bomb threat dismissed

BANGKOK: -- Thailand’s government has dismissed bomb threats to Bangkok as rumour and speculation. Recent newspaper reports had misinterpreted the police order to increase security in the capital city, the Interior Minister Pol. Gen. Chidchai Vanasatidya said on Tuesday.

The chief of the Special Branch Police had earlier reportedly warned of a possible bomb attack in Bangkok.

''There is no such threat. He did not say so, but the media has misinterpreted it. He only said there was a need to tighten security,'' said the interior minister.

The government plans to appoint a special committee to investigate reports that people have mysteriously disappeared in the country's three southern border provinces, Pol. Gen. Chidchai said.

Local residents and human rights groups have accused the police of being behind the disappearances.

''We will set up a committee to investigate it. Some said 10 people have disappeared and some said it was up to a hundred. We need to find out the truth to restore trust,'' he said.

BANGKOK: -- Thailand’s government has dismissed bomb threats to Bangkok as rumour and speculation.

I suppose we'll know it's a serious threat when the powers-that-be start restricting the sale of water pipe at the Home Pro outlets in Krung Thep, eh? :o

Right. And when they start monitoring a possible car bomb candidate, whose movements have recently brought him to BKK, as per today's BKK Post.

All they need now is that national threat level warning system they use to drive the population nuts in the U.S.

"Red, uh, no, sorry, Orange!, oops we meant yellow..."

That's scary - kat, have you a link to that article?

I can't look for the link right now, because my internet connection is too slow. But it is in Tuesday's BKK Post, for sure.

ok, here's the link:

www.bangkokpost.com/News/26Apr2005_news11.php

It's on page 11 of the electronic BKK Post: "Revenge bombing in city feared".

The article states that the suggested separatist arrived in the city to set off bombs to coincide with the April 28th anniversary.

:o That's really funny, especially along side your avatar.

I flew into BKK last week and there was a strong army presence at the airport. They were stopping certain people going into the airport and searching luggage. This wasn't happening 2 weeks prior to that when I was leaving the country.

Surely the fact that there is a need to tighten security must indicate in itself that the government fears a threat from the radical idiots and their collaborators who have planted bombs in the south.

How do they expect the media to interpret it?

Are they being as honest about this as they have been about the bird flu epidemic?
