The room rate was reduced to 250 baht and the belllhop gave them 30 baht back they then had paid 280 for the room and Boonlert had a bowl of somtam.

250 cost plus 30 refunded plus 20 pocketed equals 300

Jing has it correct here. The room charge was reduced to 250 baht, plus 30 refunded, and 20 scammed.

Doing the math of 90 times 3 is the wrong way of counting. This is like the old children's puzzle about having eleven fingers. Count down on one hand 10 - 9 - 8 - 7 - 6 plus five on the other hand is 11.

John, how much did each guy paid, i e what was the net lodging cost per person?

Each guy was responsible for his share of 250 baht = 83.33, plus 10 baht per person received from the scamming bellboy. 93.33, totalling 280.

The net cost of the room was always 250, never 270.

Price was Bt300,

changed to Bt250

Therefore each of the men have to cough up 83.333333 (250 diveded by 3)

Now, little Boonlert, gave each man back Bt10

Now the men have each paid 93.3333333

Three times 93.3333333333 = 280

plus Boonlerts 20 in his sky-rocket = 300

As expected there is no Bt10 missing.

HA!

Sorry George but this is correct.

OK, this it it.

The men PAID 270 baht

250 baht went to the hotel desk

20 baht went to the bellboy (unknown to them)

So the 20 baht should be subtracted from 270 to be 250 cost of room, not added (so that's the trick).

So no missing 10 baht, its all accounted for.

20 baht went to the bellboy (unknown to them)

That's one way of looking at it, and it works also.

Correct, here is some explanations from the site where I got the idea, rewrote it and made it "Thailand related": :)

This is a good one to tell your mates.

250 is an odd number so it will not divide evenly like 300b did originally just as 50 is as well so the above example equations of percentage by Bino and Jingthing are correct and why there is no 10 baht missing..

Posted

it's a tricky puzzle

It masks the fact that after 50 B is given back the condition is changed,

the room cost is not 300 anymore but 250

and the amount of money to go around is reduced from 300 to 270,

So, forget about matching 300, now we have 270 that has been spent, not 300.

Out of which 250 goes to the hotel and 20 to the bellboy.

You guys are playing silly buggers!

300 given to hotel

50 given to Somchai, there fore the hotel has 250

Somchai returns 10 to three men 30 baht, keeps 20 baht.

Someone said each man has now payed 90, therefore 270

Then the mistake is made. They say 270 + 20=290

It should be 270 - 20=250 -> 250 is what the hotel has, 20 is what Somchai has. Problem solved!

You have your debits and credits mixed up! Come on people! How many of you are supposed to be businessmen? No wonder so many businesses go under in Thailand! :):D:D

I like how the boss skillfully attempted to make this Thai related when clearly it belongs in farangpub... :)

And I see another topic closed today because it "only happened in Phuket"which is mentioned as "not enough" thailand related. :D

270 Baht [paid] + 30 Baht [returned change] = 300 Baht.

But what I want to know is what kind of dodgy hotel allows 3 farangs to share a room and only charge 300 Baht for it and then, without any prompting, give a 50 Baht discount.

Something fishy going on here on a number of levels.

Bt270 + Bt20 = Bt290 - so where is the missing Bt10?

Instead of giving each of the men Bt10, he should have given each man (50 divided by 3) Bt16.666666 (recurring).

3 x 6.66666 (recurring) = the Bt20 the bellboy pocketed.

However, still not sure if that answers "Where is the missing Bt10?"

My head is spinning.

10+10+10 = 30

30+250 = 280

280+20 = 300
