ZyXEL P-660H-Tx Series ADSL Router

I'm trying to set up a ZyXEL P-660H-Tx v2 router and, according to the Quick Start Guide, I should get the opportunity to go to the Advanced Setup after changing the default password from 1234:

But it simply doesn't happen. I don't get the screen that says "Go to Wizard setup" or Go to Advanced Setup", etc.

Instead it runs the "Configuration Genie" application which doesn't allow any access to the router's setup pages.

Anyone else use this router and got to the Advanced setup?

I searched the forum and saw a couple of threads about it:

In the last thread, the post from Prasert shows exactly what I was expecting to see:

The tab labelled "P-660R-T1 V2" on the left has lots of setup items listed - Under "Network" there is WAN, LAN, NAT, etc. I've been clicking on that and all around it till the mouse is nearly broken and I get nothing! I even tried Internet Explorer to go to 192.168.1.1 in case Firefox was playing silly buggers with scripts or something.

In the first thread, the post from cykomiko shows what I am getting:

I just can't get that tab to expand. The solution posted by cykomiko - resetting the router - didn't work for me.

I bet it's something really silly.

Anyone got any ideas?

Means you have skipped the Wizard first time you accessed the router.

With power to the router turned on, press the reset button at the rear of the router for 5 seconds.

Then log into the router again using its default password. The Wizard should now appear.

Yes, when I saw the solution posted by cykomiko here which was to reset the router, I thought that would solve it, but it didn't. I'll give it another go in case the first time didn't work - but it did turn off some LEDs, and stop Internet access so I assumed the reset worked.

All this is being done on a friends new router. My own ZyXEL router is model 660R-61C, and is no problem at all - I can get into the setup pages with no problems like this.

What I don't read anywhere: is this a router provided by the ISP (with modified firmware maybe)? Or was it bought in a shop and can you go back for warranty?

If resetting the router still does not allow you to login, following instructions in the manual, I think this box has a hardware failure.

Hi Prasert - thanks for replying. I asked the same question about where he got it and he said it was a brand new one that he bought. I also thought maybe it was an ISP-modified one, but not so.

The good news is that I managed to get to the "Wizard or Advanced Mode" selection screen shown in my first post.

I'll post the details here for posterity in case anyone else gets stuck like I did. I said it was probably something silly and I think it was!

I did the same as before - reset the router while it was powered on and working normally. After the Internet connection was lost and most of the lights went out and started flashing, I waited until all but the Internet light was on and used Firefox to get to 192.168.1.1 to access the router's "Web Configurator". I logged in using the default password - 1234.

Then I got the same screen that showed no details in the second tab - the one under the Status tab. This one:

(This image is for a different router, but you get the picture!)

So again I ran the CD setup software, entered all the details - VCI, VPI, username, password, etc - and the new login password for the router. I've a feeling I didn't change the login password for the router the first time I did this.

All started working OK and the "Web Configurator" went back to the login screen. This time I entered the new password and I got the screen that allows me to go to the Advanced Mode. :) The second one here:

After going there, I saw all the Advanced Mode options:

So I'm thinking that it is essential to change the default password in order to get to the option to go to the advanced setup. This could be a deliberate safety measure since many default passwords are well known and malware might try to modify the router's configuration it if can get to the advanced setup.
