When Open Up A Second Page On New Small Web Site?

Featured Replies

It seems natural and normal to start with one single page when starting up a new, small, hobby, web page.

But when you play with the site, and add more and more stuff, the site gradually becomes bigger, until you reach a point when it is time to open up a second page.

Question: Is there a rule of thumb about, at what point, you should start thinking about a second page ?

(We are talking about a hobby website, there is no need to worry about commercial considerations.)

When you think it's becoming awkward, then it might be time to split your content. If you can find logical separations in topic, and each of the new topics would occupy at least a screenful, that's probably a good indication that you need more pages.

Something else you might want to consider, if you don't yet have encyclopedic volumes of content regarding your hobby, is to keep all your content on one page and use anchors (aka "jumps") to make navigating between sections easier.

A wordpress blog would be ideal for this if you have not built it yet, they are free and can be installed with one click using fantastico inside cpanel.

Adding new pages/posts can also be done with one click, all links are added automatically.

You are taking the time to publish your information online making it available and useful of others that share your interest. When the amount of information or different sections within your hobby spills over 3(?) screen-fulls of a browser window it's probably time to start breaking it up. Personally I like the common menu format on the left-hand side of each screen so that navigation around your site is easy and does not force visitors to trudge through every page to get to what they are looking for. Take a critical eye at the layout of ThaiVisa.com for example. The way subjects are broken down into sub-forums based on topic or region.

Also I like a simple clear scheme in navigation. A 'get me back to the home page' button is good.
