Ajahn Summedho sums up this short book well in his foreword:

"I recommend this book to all students of the Buddha's teaching, especially to those who are stuck in the belief that science will one day provide us with all the answers."

The book is a collection of articles that have appeared in The Middle Way, and the scepticism of the title is directed both at science and at those of the Buddha's teachings that have been turned into doctrine. This one's not exactly for beginners, though.

Sounds like an interesting read for a long flight. There's far too much dogma and ritual in buddhism and not near enough new thought.

Scriptures are fine for scholars and newcomers but you'll never find enlightenment in a book.

Camerata, sounds like a good read, and published by Thailand's own River Books.

Scriptures are fine for scholars and newcomers but you'll never find enlightenment in a book.

The Tipitaka itself - in the Kalama Sutta - encourages the study of Buddhadharma, both written and spoken - with an open and discerning mind. The books themselves don't bring enlightenment, but without a few instructions here and there you're unlikely to find it on your own.

Am reminded of a Muslim saying:

"This thing we tell of can never be found by seeking, yet only seekers find it." - Abu Yazid Al-Bistami
