I'm a US nurse interested in doing volunteer work in SE Asia for a year starting in April 2010. Would like to start in Thailand and then go to Laos and Vietnam. Have some friend of friend contacts but am looking for suggestions and advice. Do I need a work permit to do volunteer work? What type of visa will I need? I'd like to keep my options open, possibly staying up to 3 months, having the option of leaving and going back. Know of any place an English speaking RN could be of help? Possibly an orphanage or clinic that could provide lodging in exchange for volunteer work? Maybe something around Chaing Mai? Appreciate any tips.

Thanks.

Yes, you need a work permit.

An NGO will provide you with one.

They also make a letter for you so you can apply for a Non immigrant O visa at your local consulate.
