BANGKOK: -- Justice Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga Friday admitted that the Thai authorities could not enter the disputed area near Preah Vihear Temple to arrest former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra if he goes there.

He was commenting on reports that Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen would take Thaksin to tour the disputed area.

Pirapan said although the area is still under dispute, the Cambodian troops have taken control and Thai troops could not enter the area without coordinating with the Cambodian side first.

He said if the Thai authorities rush in to arrest Thaksin, the relation with Cambodia could further deteriorate.

Govt welcomes Hun Sen’s plan to visit disputed border area

BANGKOK: -- (NNT) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is not concerned by the Cambodian Prime Minister’s planned visit to a disputed area near Preah Vihear Castle on the Thai-Cambodian border.

Speaking of Cambodian PM Hun Sen’s trip to the overlapping zone on the common border, Information Department Deputy Director-General, Thani Thongphakdi, said the Thai government has been aware of the visit as Cambodian authorities have consistently informed the Thai counterparts of the plan. He said the Thai government would not mind if the Cambodian Prime Minister wished to enter the 4.6 square kilometer overlapping zone and is ready to assign high-ranking officials to welcome the premier.

Mr Thani stressed that the visit will not affect Thailand’s rights and sovereignty.

The deputy director-general added that the Cambodian PM’s visit can be viewed as an opportunity for him to get first-hand information in the area and hoped that it would pave the way for negotiations on border conflicts. He said no reinforcements would be needed as the visit is considered normal.

PM chairs security meeting as Cambodian premier plans border visit

BANGKOK: -- (TNA) - Prime Minisiter Abhisit Vejjajiva on Thursday chaired a meeting of Thailand’s National Security Council (NSC) to discuss various security issues including Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen's plan to visit the border area near the Prah Viharn or Preah Vihear, the disputed ancient Khmer temple this weekend.

The prime minister told reporters after the one-hour meeting that the NSC had discussed general issues related to security matters and nothing was of particular concern.

As for the Cambodian premier's plan to visit border area near Prah Viharn Temple, Mr Abhisit said the panel believed that the local security personnel could take care of the situation, no special instructions have been issued.

However, if Mr Hun Sen wishes to travel into the 4.6 sq km border area claimed by both countries, Mr Abhisit said, talks must be held prior to the visit.

Regarding the anti-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) plan to rally, Mr Abhisit said the government would strictly observe the legal procedures and would do its utmost to maintain law and order.

Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said earlier that the NSC meeting at Don Mueang Airport was not a special session, but that the prime minister had come back from official duty in the southern province.

Thailand’s defense, interior, foreign affairs, and finance ministers as well as Army, Navy, Air Force and police chiefs attended the meeting.

Mr Suthep said that the meeting would touch on the Cambodian prime minister's plan to visit the border province February 6-7.

He affirmed that the government would try its best to protect the people and the kingdom’s national interest. (TNA)

But the PAD does plan on being there and the rumor about Thaksin was their way of using the media to draw the crowd together. Mr Suthep said he hoped Veera Somkwamkid, a key leader of the People’s Alliance for Democracy, would drop his plan to lead PAD members in a protest against Hun Sen during the visit.

Read into the announcement that the government/military are not going to get dragged into a live fire event with the Cambodian military over some disputed area. Note that Hun Sen would like this and revel in it too. He has basically just forced the leader of the opposition in Cambodia into exile to protect the interests of Vietnam in Cambodia. As Vietnam is a traditonal enemy of Cambodia Hun Sen would like a smany distractions to this weak link of his as possible ergo ramping up anything he can with Thailand to turnm attention away from the other side.

As Thaksin needs a game changiung event he too could benefit from a dangerous event

As seizure time nears the temperature is being raised rapidly by those without power. It remains to be seen iuf those with power retain their cool or not.

Edited to add: It also remains to be seen if Thaksin will step foot on disputed soil with Hun Sen as he will run the risk of being seen as siding with Cambodia over Thailand in a land dispute. His links to Cambodia have to date impacted negatively on him but only in a small way but would he want to risk that negativity being multiplied?

Hun Sen to visit disputed border: Thai Deputy PM

BANGKOK: -- (TNA) - Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban on Friday reaffirmed that Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen will visit the disputed border areas near the ancient Preah Vihear temple this weekend, while the Thai foreign ministry said the Cambodian premier cannot enter the overlapping area claimed by both countries without informing Thailand.

Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva earlier chaired a meeting of the National Security Council (NSC) to discuss various issues including Mr Hun Sen's plan to visit the border areas on February 6 and 7.

The Thai deputy premier said that the security agency initially instructed governors and the Second Army Area commander to take care of the Cambodian premier and oversee the situation.

When asked whether Mr Hun Sen's visit is related to the recent moves of the anti-government groups attempting to incite violence, Mr Suthep declined to comment on the issue, but said that Thailand will inform Cambodia to avoid any problem along the border, because it would affect the lives of local residents.

Mr Suthep said that the Cambodian premier plans to visit three or four areas near the disputed zone and that he has warned Cambodia over possible intensified conflict following the visit.

The Thai deputy premier also urged activist Veera Somkwamkid, who earlier announced that he will lead Thai nationalists to the Preah Vihear temple protesting Mr Hun Sen's visit, not to make the situation more complicated.

The deputy premier said that it is the responsibility of the government to solve the Thai-Cambodian border conflict. If many parties get involved, the situation can intensify.

Meanwhile, Chavanont Intarakomalyasut, secretary to the Thai Minister of Foreign Affairs, said on Friday that the Thai foreign ministry has been informed of Mr Hun Sen's visit in the areas near the Ta Muan Thom and Preah Vihear temples.

Mr Chavanont said there is no problem if Mr Hun Sen visits within Cambodian soil, but he cannot enter the 4.6 sq km border area claimed by both countries where Thai and Cambodian troops have been deployed if he does not inform Thailand.

"We're not worried because the Thai government has handled the issue under the law. Security personnel are on standby in every area and they are ready to control situation along the Thai-Cambodian border," said Mr Chavanont.

Following news reports on Hun Sen's visit this weekend, Thai soldiers along the border in Kantararak district of Si Sa Ket province stepped up security measures, while a number of army personnel are on standby to maintain order.

Second Army Area commander Lt-Gen Veevarit Chornsamrit said that he will meet with Cambodian deputy supreme commander Chea Dara Friday afternoon to discuss Mr Hun Sen's security plan.

Gen Veevarit said the Cambodian premier will preside at the opening ceremony of a village in a Cambodian border town and may visit Cambodian troops stationed along the border.

There's no report that Thailand's convicted former premier Thaksin Shinawatra will travel with Mr Hun sen as rumours have intimated, said Gen Veevarit. (TNA)
