Questions About Prices Of Things In Thailand

Hi,

I'm going to be travelling to Thailand for the first time next month so I am planning to shop for anything and everything over there that is usually expensive here (Denmark). so if anyone could give me an estimate on the following questions would be brilliant!

I'm thinking of getting a tattoo, but as I would be tanning and being in the water most of the time I'm in Thailand, I would like to get the tattoo about a day before I leave. something not too big and something that doesn't take too much time. so my question on this is how much do tattoos usually cost in thailand and is it safe/clean to get them done there or would I be better off paying way more and doing it back home?

While being in Thailand I would also like to visit the dentist to get my teeth cleaned and maybe whitened but not too sure of the last one as I've heard they usually whiten teeth to the extend that they look fake? what's the usual price (in baht) for just teeth cleaning?

Last one. As I would basically be travelling with hardly anything on my way to Thailand and buy whatever I need over there, I thought I would buy one of those hard plastic cabin trolley luggage (for weekend trips) and a 60/65 L backpack. now I have read that I shouldn't buy a backpack in Thailand because they're usually knock offs and not good quality, after this trip to Thailand (where I will be for 3 weeks) I plan to go on a long backpacking trip in the autumn and plan to do more backpacking trips in the future, so I'd like a backpack that's sturdy and one that will last a long long time, I'm willing to pay a fair amount of money on this and get a real, known or branded company backpack, still hoping though that it would be cheaper then in Denmark otherwise it really makes no sense to buy one there.

I really hope I can get some help on these. thanks in advance to anyone and everyone who has any info for me!

I remember hauling a backpack around on my first trip to thailand. Forget it. you don't need it. Just some comfy clothes that will fit into Your Cabin Luggage. You're never more than 100 metres from a Laundry place in Thailand and you can get everyting washed & dried in a couple of hours. I can't think of anything in Thailand that will be considerably cheaper than Denmark especially if its quality Goods.

No Idea about Tatoo's or Teeth but they are sure to be cheaper in Thailand.

don't know the price of tatoo (usually they have a book with pics), depending on the design, size and hows many colours. They do it on the street in many touristy places, like on khaosan rd in bangkok, but there are totoo studios as well.

cleaning from 600baht, whitening don't know the price, but you can choose "how clean" you want your tooth to look like. Anyway, within a few months they will be back to the original state, so clean them the best.

quality backpacks in thailand are more expensive than in europe, you can check ebay or internet shops (might be cheaper, even with an internationals shipping, than in denmark). Don't buy thai cheap ones - they are only for 1 time use.

I am not sure about hard plastic trolleys - they take space, even when they are empty, and they brake easily if not filled up. Anything else, but that

I got my teeth filled and cleaned for 700 baht per filling (3 of) and 720 for the scaling (at first) in Maptaphut. Around 25% of the cost in Australia.

The rucksacks I've bought in Thailand over the last 5 years (3 of) have all been cheap but absolute <deleted> with the stitching and the zippers. Buy a good rucksack in a country that you trust, not here in Thailand. Those Zupa-le-Tari or whatever they're called are total crap and don't last two days on your back without ripping apart.

Dentist here. Rucksack from home.

I keep my scars on the outside, tattoos on the inside.

as the others have said you can buy everything in thai ,but if you are going to travel around i think that a few words of Thai would be some thing you cant put a price on and comfortable footwear is a must also if you are the type that will feel the heat make sure you bring some antifungal and rash cream that you know works .

cheers.

The average price for good teeth cleaning is around 700 Baht. Most things can be bought for a less price in Thailand with the exception of imported items such as cheese. My friend just brought me three 400 gram packs of cheese, for $2.90 a pack which sells here for 600 Baht or $18.00 a pack.

teeth cleaning around 3 ,000 thb , tattoos are more expensive in thailand than they are in uk in my opinion.

Teeth cleaning for 3,000 baht, where are you paying those prices?

I pay 500 baht at a dentist opposite Carrefour in On Nut.

Tattoos more expensive in Thailand, the most expensive I know of in Thailand is Jimmy Wong in Suk soi 5, his prices are on a par with the Uk.

Friends living in the UK tell me they are paying upwards of £80 (4,000 baht) per hour, friends in Australia tell me they are paying about A$ 140 plus another A$ 40 for the design stencil.

I have seen some excellent work carried out in Thailand and it is no where near these prices, I know many who come to Thailand just to have tattoo work carried out.

However at the end of the day, you get what you pay for, what price do you put on quality?

Rules of thumb I found out during my trips to Thailand, price difference with Switzerland (I think Denmark is similar):

Divide your home country prices by the following:

- meat & meat products produced locally in Thailand: 10

- fruits produced locally in Thailand: 30

- food produced locally in Thailand: 20

- one person's unqualified work (for example maid): 15

- qualified person's work (for example university-trained English-speaking clerk): 5 to 10

- specialist's work (such as a doctor, computer programmer, etc.): 5

- specialist's work requiring a lot of technical equipment (such as a dentist): 3 to 5

- SE-Asia or China produced clothes: 10

- Branded electronics (Sony, LG, Samsung, etc.): 1 (roughly same prices)

- Unbranded electronics: 2 to 5 (but watchout the quality)

As for the tattoo, i would recommend getting it done back home. dont know how good they are in Denmark. And im not saying the quality is no good here either. But speaking from a personal experience when i had the same decision to make about a tattoo i decided to get it done in UK, i knew the place was clean, i knew i was more likley to get what i asked for.

But above all that i just wrote, for something that is most probably going to be a part of you the rest of your life, paying a bit more somewhere you trust can never hurt

I think that "dmax" might have been referring to teeth whitening which is between 3,000-5,000 baht where I live.

I got a tattoo here years ago (1998) (Thai influence) and had it recolored in 2007 in the states shortly before moving here. The work was top notch , and i have gotten alot of compliments from tattoo artists with years of experience as to the level of detail. It was done on Samui, and took about 5 hours to complete. Very hygienic studio. Total cost 3,000 baht, but we are talking 12 years ago. If you decide to have it done here, take your own advice and get it done a couple of days before you depart. The heat, and humidity does a number on a new tattoo, and with sweating it will be very hard to keep it clean.

Following your calculation that would make a kg Papaya in Switzerland something like 30 Sfr, think you are a little optimistic about the prices in Thailand, same counts for meat and food.

Hi Guys,

Thanks to everyone for their in put! I've done some research on backpacks and know exactly what I should be looking for, so I will be venturing out to our local hiking store and buy a backpack here instead of in Thailand. I have also contacted a few tattoo artists and denists. most of the dentists I've come across on the internet say they charge 700 to 1000 Bhat, which is still cheaper then here. I don't know, maybe I would have a better time finding a cheaper dentist if I go and look around myself? the problem with that is that I don't want to be spending too much time looking for dentists or tattoo artists as I would want to be in the sun and on the beach (you would know why if you know what kind of a winter we've been having! ;-) ) and then there is also the likelyhood of having to wait to get an appointment. so any suggestions on that? should I just go for the first or second I find because there's a waiting period?

@PoorSucker. 200 DKK is not the same as 200 THB. I wouldn't be asking about prices in Thailand if I was willing the pay the same in Denmark. of course certain things like tattoos and backpacks I'm willing to pay more.

I tried to contact Jimmy Wong but my email bounced back. personally, if this guy is as good as the others, why should I pay him more just because he's famous in Thailand? I've seen some work from an artist called Poo from Saklai Studio at the Siam Square, she has some really good stuff. other artists I've contacted are Eak Tattoo on Kao San Road, Boy on Kao San Road and Bangkok Tattoo on Big C department store. I have my own design that I've sent and asked them if they could make it. my question here is to ask if anyone has any experience with any of these artists or if you know which one's the best and cleanist. you could number list them, as in who's number 1 and so on. I'm going to Thailand in less then a month, so hopefully someone can give me a heads up on this. thanks so much!!!

I bought whitening gel off the internet and mouthgaurds at the sporting goods store for $10.00. I have white teeth now. I paid 700 baht for teeth cleaning.the dentist chose to use an industrial size electric drill (so it appeared) I wish I had asked them to use a hand tool instead.
