Forget about mobile broadband(3G) outside of Bangkok or Chiang Mai, you will be stuck with superslow connectivity especially in the evenings.

Hutch offer quite fast connections using their CDMA.

Check their website to see if their coverage nationwide corresponds with your travel in Thailand.

I use a prepaid happy DTAC SIM when I am in Thailand.

The cost was last time 49 THB for 24 hours. You can get it cheaper if you buy it monthly or weekly. Just phone *1003 as far as I remember.

But the speed is not very good upcountry. But Ok for emails but too slow for larger downloads.

go to any 7-eleven and buy a d-tac happy data simmcard (if I emember about 300 Baht) and a happy phone top up card.

follow the following instructions

Dtac / Dprompt

Dtac offer a full range of monthly-recurring pre-pay packages that are ideal for the short or long-term visitor.

PrePay Charges

The rates for Dtac's monthly-recurring prepay package, including VAT, are listed below:

3 hours per month - 33 baht

6 hours per month - 54 baht

20 hours per month - 106 baht

50 hours per month - 213 baht

140 hours per month - 427 baht

Unlimited hours per month - 1069 baht per month

Procedure for activating the package:

1. Insert the SIM into a mobile phone.

2. Top up the mobile phone with a regular voice top-up card, enough to pay for the number of hours required.

3. Telephone the helpline: dial 1678 and press 7 for English. A Dtac representative will answer your call, you must say the following:

“Please ACTIVATE ** hours GPRS, monthly-recurring package.”

They may ask you one or two security questions….. Dtac will action your request and send you an SMS within 10 minutes to confirm your purchase. Wait for the SMS before using the SIM.

4. Remove the SIM from the mobile phone and insert it into your wireless internet card.

5. Optional: reset the usage counters in either Watcher or Mobilink.

Don't forget: this is a monthly-recurring package, make a note of the start date and remember to topup the SIM every month before the monthly due-date. For example, if you activated the package on the 15th of January then you must make sure you have enough credit on the SIM on 15th February. Dtac will take the money off your SIM on the 15th of every month, if there is not enough money you will be disconnected!

Procedure for toping up the SIM:

1. Turn off the computer, remove the wireless internet card and remove the SIM.

2. Place the SIM in a mobile phone and switch on.

3. Purchase a regular voice topup card in 7-Eleven and scratch off the security cover to reveal the numbers.

4. Use the prefix: *100* and input all the numbers. Press dial.

5. Wait a few seconds and an SMS will arrive telling you how much credit has been added to the SIM.

6. When you have enough credit remove from the phone and place it back in your internet card.

7. You can now carry on using the card until the same date next month.

Coverage with Dtac is excellent, the service is highly reliable, it can be used across all Thailand and very rarely spontaneously disconnects.

Unlimited Pre-Pay

As of early 2006, two unlimited-use pre-pay packages are available. The rates, including VAT, are:

42 baht for 24 hours

267 baht for 7 days

Using unlimited prepay is easy. It can be started within 10 minutes of calling the Dtac office and is very useful if your usual 20 minutes on the internet suddenly turns into several hours. Put enough credit on your SIM to cover the cost, phone the Dtac helpline and ask for 1 day or 7 days unlimited, the Dtac staff will start your new tariff within 10 minutes.

Dtac and EDGE

Dtac has upgraded the GPRS network to EDGE across all of the country. They has exclusively used Nokia for all infrastructure work. Loyalty to Nokia is certainly paying off: the new network is highly reliable, works faultlessly, has zero down time, and has excellent bandwidth and coverage. Over the last two years Dtac has given its subscribers a very high quality network, equal if not superior to any of the networks in Europe.

ok, for real surfing it is not that high speed, but still better than dial up and e-mail works actually fast.
